That makes sense. You don't think the department is going to do job searches for replacements? That would imply they are just going to let the dept. die. I have known a number of WashU J-lit people over my time as a grad student and I always got the impression it was a relatively lively program. But I suppose that is just my impression.

Curious about this -- you mean WashU in St. Louis, correct? Both Rebecca Copeland and Marvin Marcus are modern lit scholars and are both still there, no? Though I think they are both nearing retirement, I'd imagine...

Offered a FLAS at a school after I already accepted a different offer (and declined the offer at FLAS school - guess they didn't get the memo). What a great way to make you second-guess your decision!

Thanks for getting back to me. That is a bummer, but something I figured would happen. I am thinking I am going to have to sublet for a couple months too, because my fiance will be coming to live with me, but due to work obligations on her part she won't be able to arrive until November-ish. Subletting is an option I reckon though, right? Also, how do you get to campus? Where I currently live I bike everywhere, everyday (I am one of those crazies with 4 lights on their bikes and waterproof pants and panniers). However, I am wondering if that will be practical, or safe, in Hawaii. If so, I figure I could live farther away from campus (~10 miles) and still commute everyday. Would living farther away bring down the cost of rent?

Just to follow up in case someone else finds himself in this position. It looks like I will indeed get the remainder of the money after all the tuition costs have been paid. I don't know from which scholarship, but my understanding is that any leftovers funds will be issued to me as a check a month or so after the semester starts. So yea, that is great! Fully funded MA's in my area are not the most common (unless you are TAing or FLASing), I am excited to be able to focus my first year on just studying and not worrying about balancing a teaching schedule, anyways, just thought I'd share.

I have decided, Hawaii here I come. Full tuition remission plus a little stipend. Super pumped, the school is an especially good for the somewhat nascent area of Japanese studies I am going to focus on. I don't suppose anyone else is heading to Hawaii?

I went to New School for undergrad. Great school, but NYC is expensive to begin with, you'll need loans to cover life outside of school on top of tuition.

Hi folks, I have been accepted to an MA program that I am really excited about and have been offered 3 scholarships between the school, department and a 'center' on campus. Together, these scholarships cover the cost of tuition and leave about $3,500 plus. Am I correct in my thinking that I will then get that $3,500 to use a stipend (i.e. living costs)? I mean, they won't max out at the tuition and then the remainder just disappears, right? I have read what I can of the scholarships, but the there is not a terrible amount of fine print with them. Anyone had an experience like this?

I applied too. I am a literature guy, I don't know that they give money to literature students, but I thought it worth the try anyways, ya never know. But yes, May 1 seems a lone time away....

Things have gotten quiet around these parts. I feel like some people are making decisions by now. I am real close to signing the dotted line for Hawaii, but I am waiting on final funding info from every school I was accepted to so as to make the responsible decision. What about you folks? Where ya heading this fall?
