Hi All, I'm looking for a quick 4 week sublet in Ann Arbor (June 21 - July 18). I'll be attending the ICPSR program. I'm open to different living situations if anyone wants to share a room or a solo room would be nice or rent me your basement or teepee or whatever. I'm also flexible on price as long as it's fair. About me: 30y/o, male, sociology PhD student at UC Irvine, very clean, easy-going, mostly vegetarian. Thanks for reading. Any help would be appreciated. I can be reached at cwgibson_at_uci.edu. Chris
  2. Hey all, I'm looking for a place to stay for four weeks (June 21 - July 18) in Ann Arbor while I attend the ICPSR program. Anyone here want to make a little money by renting me some space? I'd take a spare room or we could split your room and I'll sleep on an air mattress and pay half your rent. I'm open to ideas. Four weeks will fly by quick so I'm not picky. 3. Absolutely. Take up one thing and commit to doing it everyday for at least a few months. You'll start realizing tangible progress and then you'll get hooked on pushing yourself and then you'll love it. For me it was getting into a yoga routine that sent me over the edge a few years ago. I've also gone through similar phases with hiking and surfing. Good luck! Also... what language are you learning on code academy?
  4. Learn an instrument, build a canoe, travel somewhere, learn to sail... so many options! It's going to be a great summer!
  5. anyone wanting to rent a room off campus starting in September? i'm putting the feelers out because i'm looking to rent a house in Costa Mesa. maybe we can connect early on. send me a PM if you want to talk. ideal roommate type: easy-going, grad student, relatively healthy lifestyle, surfer/beach goer/outdoorsy type, good vibes overall.
  6. I think when u get refurbished there isn't a student discount too.
  7. Kinda ironic how as I was reading your post, on my new ipad, about liking touchscreens, I accidentally touched the red down vote button on your post! Damn touchscreen! Anyone know how to undo those vote things? I got mine refurbished from the apple store online... It's cheaper and still comes with a warranty.
  8. thanks for the suggestions everyone! does anyone else ever daydream about a solar flare or something knocking out electricity and sending us back to hand tools and letter carriers?
  9. Anyone use an ipad for school stuff (pdf reading/annotating, note-taking, scheduling, etc...)? Are there apps you recommend? I'm not sure what pdf readers I should check out that might be better than Acrobat. I know there are a few threads on topics like this in other forums but I thought it would be useful to hear from the sociology group. Thanks.
  10. Glad to finally be posting in this thread! UC Irvine here I come!
  11. i'm on the waitlist too. i got an email this week asking me if i was still interested.
  12. i was thinking the same thing! but obviously this discussion hits on something that is extremely important and concerning for most of us so each time it comes up it gets people a little fired up. i'd like to see new NRC rankings. i think the methods of that one are useful but the data is just too old. especially for newer programs like Irvine.
  13. seems like your stats are a good enough foundation to start from... hopefully your grad gpa will eclipse your overall undergrad. i was in a similar position (low 3's undergrad overall, 3.9 grad) and it worked out this year. that said... it's all about your SoP and explaining why you're a good fit for the department. also i heard recently that the AW score on the GRE should not be downplayed (which is contrary to what I had read in other places)... for what it's worth, that might be something you could focus on if you retake the test to get that up in the 5s.
  14. Ya I had the same concern about NRC when I looked at them. It seems like USNWR is just a popularity contest though... which I guess is relevant since those who voted would likely be the ones I'll be sending my CV to in the future. But still, it seems like a very oversimplified metric. I wonder what kind of potential there is for new rankings to come out and be very disruptive.
