  1. deleonj, congratulations!! I finally wrote to them this week and they said they were waiting to hear back from the admitted students before they send out other notifications. I am on the verge of accepting another school, but ideally I'd like to hear back from all schools before doing so. I appreciate the information!
  2. Has anyone heard from Michigan's Screen Arts & Cultures program? I think some people were interviewed in February, but has anyone heard anything official? I'm starting to worry that I didn't follow their post-application instructions properly.
  3. Congratulations on the admits, everyone! I have some information about Chicago, although I haven't heard back from them. They are admitting 7 students this year and have already notified all of them. As usual, there is no wait list. The visiting period for admitted students should be in early April. The only schools I've heard back from are Pittsburgh and Indiana. The former was an acceptance, the latter a rejection. They seem to have emailed out all of their rejections on the same day, February 14th. Has anyone else heard from Pittsburgh? Also, is anyone on the wait list at Indiana (just out of curiosity) - do they even have a wait list? Sorry, I don't know anything about Brown, USC, UCLA, or Rochester.
  4. My worry now, of course, is that he'll see my presentation and say, "I'm going to reconsider your acceptance..." Thank you, and good luck with the upcoming conference! I'm sure it'll be a great experience.
  5. Thank you! I was recently accepted to the program, so I can breathe a little easier when approaching the POI. Even so, your advice is very helpful!
  6. This is how I feel about interviews as well. I know that NYU conducts interviews and I'm pretty sure that Wisconsin-Madison does too. I'm not sure whether they ask waitlisted students for interviews.
  7. Even though, as a fall 2014 PhD applicant, I technically belong on the "waiting it out..." forum, I would like some thoughts from seasoned conference-goers and students. Next month I'm presenting a paper at a conference where my POI at one of the schools I applied to will be present. I am anxious about it, mainly because by then (I think) the accepted students will have been contacted. If I haven't heard back by then, it is likely because I have been rejected. A bad impression may also keep me off the waiting list. Aside from obsessively preparing my paper/presentation and debating what I should wear (which I'm already doing), what are your thoughts about how to deal with this potentially uncomfortable (and doubtlessly nerve wracking) situation? If I have been rejected, should I still introduce myself to my POI? Obviously I should avoid asking about decisions, but how do you recommend going about talking to this person? Thank you!
  8. I wasn't checking my spam folder until yesterday when a friend told me that he didn't see his offer of acceptance last year, which sat in his spam folder for 11 days until the school gave him a call...
  9. Genre film, especially horror, and films that are on the margins of good/bad; women in filmmaking, especially horror; exhibition & audience studies.
  10. Although I felt weird about it, I did contact POIs at most of the schools I applied to. Although I won't know if it "paid off" until I am hear back from admissions, it was probably the best decision I made during my application process. In many cases, the faculty member related my interests to another faculty member's in an unexpected way. Often, he/she was able to tell me a bit more about the admissions process and things about the program itself that were not necessarily clear from the website. Their thoughts really guided the process of writing my personal statement and building my case for applying to each school.
  11. I wish I had seen this thread when I was actually in the process of applying. My final applications were due on December 15th, so now I am waiting. I applied to six schools, all in or near the Midwest, after earning my MA in New York. They are: Northwestern Pittsburgh Indiana Michigan Wisconsin-Madison UChicago My reason, at first, for applying only in the Midwest is to be near my husband, who is in Chicago. Fortunately, most of these programs fit my interests really well. I considered applying to NYU and USC, but decided I would be very happy to attend any of the above six schools. I also considered Concordia, University of Toronto, and UBC. Now I'm waiting, and it's really awful. I'm 99.9% certain that I won't be accepted to Chicago, because as Swagato said it's a very, very strong program. Swagato is right that Harvard just lost D.N. Rodowick (as well as Dominique Bluher) to UChicago. UChicago also recently collected Jacqueline Stewart from Northwestern and Dan Morgan from Pittsburgh. I heard that UChicago received roughly 250 applicants this year. Madison also has a very competitive Film Studies program. At this point, I trust the faculty to determine whether I will be a good fit at a given school. I'm also trying to prepare myself for the possibility that I will need to reapply for a second time in 2014 (well, third, if you count my first round that resulted in my MA). It's good to hear about others' experiences applying to Film/Media/Visual Studies programs!
  12. I have heard that Boston University has a good program in Media Studies and/or Film and Television Studies. I don't know about funding (many MAs in Film/Media Studies are largely unfunded, I think - at least that was my case), but a few former Boston University students I have spoken to went on to PhD programs such as the Critical Studies program at USC. University of Texas at Austin also has a Media Studies program that I have heard good things about. A friend of mine recently applied for 2014 admission.
