  1. For those successful candidates this year that were not as lucky the first time around, I'm wondering if you'd be willing to share what you did differently this time. Did you do an MA, for example? Or go out in the field or publish? Thanks in advance!
  2. That's amazing Forsaken! Congratulations!
  3. please, I've gotten so much helpful information here, it's the least I can do.
  4. Alright, guys, not too much to report. All I could get out of the (very polite) administrator was that the admissions committee met last week. She was unable to confirm whether all acceptances were already sent out, and she was not sure when all decisions would be sent. Not very helpful, I know. I am hoping that the delay is because they are figuring out how to best word their acceptances to you.
  5. Alright, I'm on it. Please stand by.
  6. I didn't apply, but I'm willing to do it -- I'll doubt they'll even look to confirm I'm an applicant. I've taught here for a few years, maybe if I email from my school email account they'd be inclined to answer?
  7. Our posts went up at the same time, but I do think we were saying the same thing, that name alone can be meaningless and that what matters is the ability to finish a program, as you have, with a tenure track position in hand. I really hope I did not offend anyone, it was definitely not my intention.
  8. I am new to this field but think Forsaken is right. One of the schools I was looking at -- an Ivy that would probably make any "best of" list -- had an entry on their website for past dissertation topics. I googled about half of the names on the list to see where they had ended up-- NONE had tenure track teaching jobs, some were in a post-doctoral program (sometimes their second or third), one had an Etsy store, another was blogging about a non-anthropology related topic, etc. etc. The academic market in general is tight but in Anthropology it is super tight. Getting in is great, but it guarantees little.
  9. good idea. I'm coming from a different academic field, and this whole finding out we're rejected by seeing a posted accepted is totally foreign and completely harsh. It's like finding out your boyfriend dumped you when you see him out with someone else.
  10. Anthrogeek, would you mind sharing your topic of research? You could PM me if you like. I am striking out on my applications and I think it's because I am coming from a different academic background and have not framed my research well. I'd love to hear about research that carries a student through to a PhD.
  11. Chicago decisions are on their way -- This from Chicago's Division of Social Sciences website: Published: February 18, 2014 Announcement Type: Admissions We have begun sending out admissions decisions via email, as of February 17. With nearly 3,000 applications in the Division, the process of confirming and sending decisions is quite lengthy, so please be patient. If you have not received a decision by Friday, March 7, please contact our office at admissions@ssd.uchicago.edu. Once your decision has been released, it will also be available via the online application, athttps://apply-ssd.uchicago.edu/apply/status
  12. It makes me crazy that these programs sometimes stagger acceptances. Every time I see an acceptance for one of my schools on the Results page, I am not sure if I should cross off the school or hold out hope. Blech.
  13. There's a lot of good advice here. Lots of hugs to you, Colorless. We are all rooting for you.
