  1. Hi! I can tell you what I know about GVSU and WMU. I currently go to GVSU. I did undergrad elsewhere, but I am taking a year of prereqs. I have heard that the grad program has had trouble finding clinical placements for everyone in the area, and some people have to drive as far as an hour and 45 minutes to clinicals. However, a girl I know at another school says that some students there have to do the same thing. It just depends on the year I guess. The grad students at the interview day said they like the program a lot so far and didn't seem to be too upset about having to travel for clinicals. They said it's very intense, and they really don't feel like they have a life outside of school, as GVSU crams everything into 4 semesters. But I don't think any of us will have much of a life during grad school no matter where we go. Personally, I have liked going to GVSU. I like most of the faculty! It's a brand new program, which you probably know, so I'm sure there are some kinks that they have to work on in the coming years. WMU is very well-established and the SLP program has a great reputation. I know a girl who is currently in the grad program, so I've asked her some questions, but I have not had a chance to visit, and I'm not sure I will be able to by April 15. She has loved WMU and said the faculty is helpful and approachable. The nice thing is that they have an on-site clinic, which I hear is extremely nice! Clinicals in the first fall, spring and both summers will be at the on-site clinic. Your part-time practicum will be off campus, and then you can do a full-time practicum wherever. The girl I know is doing hers in Chicago. That's all I really know about it, I hope it helps. I know absolutely nothing about the other MI programs you mentioned!
  2. Congrats! I am bummed, IU is my top choice at the moment, but since they don't have funding for STEPS either this year, I'm not sure if it will be a reality for me. We will see! Congrats again though!
  3. My name's Kara.. I'm 26! I majored in Spanish and International Studies with a minor in History. I have been taking pre-reqs full time since August. I am married and have two girls, who are 3 and a half and 1 and a half. In other words... I am sleep deprived. My job outside of school is loving my girls unconditionally, even when they make me want to punch myself in the face. We call our little kidlets "Scandinasians" because I'm Korean and my husband is Norwegian/Swedish. I love photography, volleyball, reading, traveling, euchre, wine, dark chocolate, and WWII history. arg, your fun fact is absolutely AMAZING! I am likely going to be relocating with the whole family for school, and I am beyond excited. I will miss the beach enormously, but MI winters.... well, we are breaking up.
  4. Pop your... eye ball out of its socket?! Say what now?!
  5. To GVSU applicants: I talked to Dr. Halling today. He said to email Dr. Macauley to set up a skype appointment if you need to. Her email is macauleb@gvsu.edu I believe. It's on the email about the interview. HOWEVER, he also said that he strongly recommends coming if you are able and are very interested in the program. He says they prefer it, as it is hard to get to know someone over Skype. I hope this helps you guys! Good luck!
  6. Congrats! I'm on the waitlist also. I'm interested to see where I sit, but I probably won't be going there!
  7. AGREED! It's 30 today here, and people are acting like it's summer haha!
  8. Sorry to hear SweetPea21.. I am possibly going to be relocating family as well. We just keep thinking.. if it's what's meant to be, it will be worth it... even if it's difficult! Good luck with your other applications!
  9. I will be constantly refreshing the website for UT-Austin now that people have been getting notified. AHH!!!
  10. My parents are coming with me to Indiana for an open house at IU. Though they won't actually be coming to the open house, we will probably walk the campus and check out the city together. I don't think there is anything wrong with bringing your parents though. I was talking about this with some classmates, and my professor overheard us and said, "We are all parents, we understand." If the flier suggests it, I don't see why not. For me, I would feel more open to approaching and asking questions on my own.
  11. Let me know what you hear back from Dr. Macauley! I have class with Dr. Halling on Monday, I'll ask him about it as well.
  12. Yea, it does sound intense! I'm interested to hear what the current grad students think of the program. I would think they would find some way to make it work for out-of-area students! Good luck everyone!
