  1. Actually it is not a good idea to apply for ETA to a host country you have previously spent significant amount of time in (more than 6 months). When I was applying for ETA to Kenya, my FPA (served on the national committee) told me I was most likely to get an Alternate since I previously spent a significant amount of time in the country. When I applied for the grant, I had just returned back from conducting summer research there. He actually advised me to apply for ETA to Rwanda instead. Due to my stubbornness, I decided to take my chances. I was selected Alternate last week. So basically, it is good to show a connection to a host country, however, a stay longer than 6 months could hurt your chances.
  2. Congratulation Mozartgirl53!!! I have been rooting for you since I started reading your caring posts on this forum. As someone who was born in Africa, I hope you will have an amazing time in Zambia and you get to take sometime to explore the beauty of the Continent. Best of luck to you and to your project. You really deserve it. For all of us in the cool Alternate Club or the "A" Team, hang in there!
  3. I applied for SSA but for ETA. I haven't received any notification yet. It looks like they only sent research notifications only for SSA. Hoping for those of us who applied for ETA will hear today or soon.
  4. For those who are looking for 'real' travel medical insurance, check out HTH Worldwide. It included full medical insurance with no deductible and most cases they pay the hospitals directly. I got sick in East Africa and I was able to go to one of the major hospitals and I didn't pay a single cent out of pocket.
  5. Hello Sub-Saharan applicants!! I just called IIE and decisions are in! He is putting in the database now, and will try to send it out by the end of the day or early in the morning! Best of luck everyone! I hope we all get it!!
  6. Is today the day? Yes, it is! I hope it is. No, I think it is. The cycle continues.
  7. This is how I go about my day nowadays: 8 AM: Today is the day. I can feel it!!!! 11 AM. Checks GradCafe to see if the're any acceptance for others. 2 PM: It is coming, be patient. Focus on school work. 4 PM: They are waiting till the work day ends, so in an hour or so. 5:30 PM: (disappointment!) I guess it is not happening today. 11 PM: I feel it, it has to be tomorrow. (in between, countless refresh of the email) And repeat.
  8. Congrats FingersCrossed!! I was soo rooting for you, and your epic profile pic! My friend from my university also just got accepted to Brazil!!
  9. Yes, you should call him tomorrow jrk2115. Since I spoke to him today, I wouldn't be reaching out to him again this week. He did say whenever he receives the final selections from State, he will notify us immediately. To be accurate, he did say that he didn't have a specific date (which I wasn't expecting from him anyways) but that his colleagues in Washington are working hard and we should expect to hear Ofcourse, "by the end of this week" could include the weekend. Or perhaps, when Mozartgirl53 called him he had received an updated information? I have no idea. Someone should call tomorrow and whatever he says is what we will go by. And congrats to everyone who got good news today!! For those still waiting like us, you're almost there...Fulbright can't keep us in this waiting state any much longer. Can they? lol
  10. Just spoke to Jermaine. Sub-Saharan folks, you should be getting notifications this week, he is waiting for the State Department for approval. "My colleagues in DC are working very hard to get those approval done. You should be hearing by the end of this week." Ahh, can't wait. I just wanna know --whether selected or not. This 'I don't know what I'm doing with my life yet' is not fun.
  11. I called the office yesterday (Friday) and the same lady I spoke to before answered my call. She said Jermaine is still out on a business trip but should be back on Monday. She said I could email him or call back on Monday because 'he may have some good news'. I have no idea what she meant by 'good news' since she didn't have any of my personal info, but hoping that 'good news' means we will be hearing from them next week. Or they could be playing a trick on us lol!
  12. Hi FingersCrossed, do you know whether they sent that email about the April 15th deadline recently or back when the recommendations came out?
  13. So I called the Program Manager for Sub-Saharan countries yesterday, but a lady answered my call since he wasn't in the office. She said I could either email him or call back on Friday since Jeremaine 'may have some information by then." Assuming this is an indication of *maybe* notifications this week or next week, the April 15th deadline thing could be true since Sub-Saharan countries are usually last to notify. I am gonna wait till Friday afternoon before calling, but any Sub-Saharan applicant wants to email him? It wouldn't hurt.
  14. Hi Mozartgirl53; I have posted a few times before the recommendation came out in January, but I have been lurking since then. But it is good to see another Sub-Saharan applicant, even though I didnt apply for research. I applied for ETA in Kenya. Are these numbers for research grants only? Any other Sub-Saharan folks out there? South Africa and Rwanda ETAs?
