  1. Good luck! I applied to Boulder, having done my leveling classes with them (3.85 GPA) and my GRE was 320, and I didn't get in - so it's definitely competitive but you never know what they are really looking for.
  2. Second-year grad student at East Carolina University here, and I have found it to be as good as in-person learning. Mostly, we watch the same lectures as the on-campus cohort and have the same syllabus. But we have the advantage of speeding up the lecturer (some of those Southern professors speak very slowly ) plus skip over the breaks and general chat. We also have a very supportive secret Facebook group of the distance education students and we collaborate all the time. Plus, I believe we get more "real-life" experience from doing externships instead of on-campus clinic. We don't do externships till our third semester. At ECU the DE program takes 8 semesters but this pace has suited me well, and there are some in the program who have continued to work full-time while in the program. Good luck with your future.
  3. I had completed all my prereqs before I applied, so I don't know if that helped. My bachelor's was in French and German, and I had a reasonable amount of volunteering / experience. You still have a couple to hear from, is that right? Hope you will be accepted by one of them - good luck!
  4. I have the galaxy note 2014 and think it's great, for the reasons you were talking about. I'm not in school just now so I don't feel I've used it to its full potential, but I am happy with it so far. Hope you enjoy yours when it arrives!
  5. I still think you're young, Mike! I am a non-traditional student, i.e old! I have 2 teenage daughters. Many years ago, my bachelor's was in French and German, and I taught French for a number of years, as well as teaching English in France and Austria. I'm Scottish, and my family and I moved to the US nearly 5 years ago. I love living here but miss family and friends - going back for a visit next week though so I'm very excited! At the moment I think I would like to work with adults, but early intervention also interests me, especially children born with hearing loss. I'm excited to get started with grad school, especially as I deferred a year due to illness. Interesting to hear all your stories - keep them coming!
  6. I deferred my place for health reasons, and the school was very understanding and accommodating. I don't know whether that would have been the case if I'd had another reason though. Probably best to speak to your school - where are you going?
  7. I have recently enjoyed Lisa Genova's books, Left Neglected and Still Alice. They are not strictly speech-related but deal with brain disorders. They were an easy read and good stories while being somewhat informative. Perfect reading for this time of our lives! I also really like anything by Oliver Sacks - his books are mainly case studies of his patients with a variety of brain disorders, but written in a very engaging way. Of course, there's always the APA manual which arrived the other day for me! I'm British, so some of the conventions of academic writing in American English are still somewhat hazy. I reckon I'll manage to put that on a shelf till I need to read it, though!
  8. Well, I know I am lucky compared to you all as I deferred my place from last year because of health problems, so will be starting at ECU in the fall. Last year I applied to 3 schools and was rejected by my other 2 (Montana and CU-Boulder) but had already heard from ECU by that point. In fact, I heard very early, before the official application due date which was very surprising. I hope it's not too long before you all start to find out where you stand. I look forward to hearing how you get on!
  9. I completed this program - it was tough but good, I thought. Some of the professors were better than others, of course, but on the whole I thought it was well-taught and prepared me well for my grad school applications. I spent the following year completing ASHA requirements (physics, statistics, biology) that I didn't have. I got into ECU on my first try and don't need to do any other prerequisites (I deferred starting for a year because of ill-health) and am excited to start in the fall. If you have any questions, please feel free to message me.
  10. LDadvocate, funny post! My favorite is no. 5, because I am a "non-traditional" student, i.e old! And it had taken me till now to work out what I want to be when I grow up! Granted, I have kids, had bouts of ill health, and moved internationally, but still, 43 is pretty old to get it together! Good luck to you all!
  11. Hi all - was just wondering if anyone else has applied to this program. I applied last year and was offered a place but ended up deferring because of health issues. I feel for you all going through the painful process of applications and waiting for replies. Anyway, just wanted to see if there were any other future Pirates out there! Also, I discovered there are no school scholarships for DE students - does anyone have any good ideas for sources of finding?
