  1. Weird I haven't been able to to get on for a few hours :/
  2. is Fastlane down for anyone else?
  3. How did you guys title these emails?
  4. ^^^ That's probably your best option then. A lit review doesn't sound like a good idea to me. Write up a research proposal (which includes a lit review anyway) to show that you're ready for indep. research
  5. I'd suggest submitting a paper you wrote for a class that you're proud of (and did well on)
  6. Thanks for the help. I'm fortunate to have a strong cv/background but I don't want to come off as arrogant, so I'm still not sure whether attaching my cv is appropriate. Any more thoughts on whether it's appropriate to include a CV would be very helpful, thanks : )
  7. Hi everyone, I'm gearing up to start emailing POIs to see if they are accepting students, and had a few questions... 1) When's a good time to send these emails out? 2) How much info should I share about myself? (just a quick intro, should I attach my cv, etc?) 3) Do I need to suggest I've looked at their research in great detail? 4)...or is it ok to just quickly and concisely ask if they are accepting new students? 5)......or is part of the goal of these emails to begin networking, in which case they can be a little longer to express my background/interests/etc.? Thanks for much for the help. As you can see, I'm new to all of this : ) If anyone has any thoughts or can point me to some resources, I would be very thankful.
  8. @xstopfloating Thanks!! that's super helpful. @Socially Awkward-Yep! Excited and terrified--it's my first time
  9. Thanks for the reply! Oh gosh I'm so intimidated by this all! I think it's too late for me to email, because the conference will be on Thursday. What did you convey in the emails? I don't want to come off as too aggressive.
  10. Hi everyone, I'm applying in the Fall 2014 and starting to make a list of POIs. I'm going to a conference next week and will be watching one of my top POIs give a talk. Ideally, I'd like to make some kind of contact with them so when I send an email in the summer asking if they will be accepting students, I can allude to the fact that we met at the conference. So my question is: How do you approach a POI after their talk? What are appropriate questions to ask, and what questions are not? Is it too early to be doing this? Thanks, I appreciate any advice/tips/suggestions!
