  1. I will keep this short but I am in a similar situation. Last year I finally finished my BSosc in Public Administration and I ended really strong in my last 2 years. In the winter of 2015 I took 4 classes to raise my GPA. As I had people tell me to do this as I applied to a couple grad programs and did not get in. So turns out I was caught for academic dishonesty on a term paper and they want to give me an F in the course. This is ironic because I get caught with something like this when the whole point of taking the course is to raise my average. This is one of those curve balls life throws at you. So I am going to have all these strong grades that I worked so hard for, followed by a big fat F at the end of the transcript. I live in Canada and I would like to to a grad degree in public policy/admin or political science. I will also be applying to US schools - specifically Howard and LBJ School of Public Affairs. Without the F I am sitting at a 3.4, with the F I am sitting at a 3.2 Will grad school count the F? Will they give me an opportunity to explain? This is disgustingly stressful. Thank!
  2. I am not in a program yet but I am wrapping up my undergrad in public administration this april. The reason why I want to get an MPA is because of my longing interest in the public service. Political science upsets me because it talks about this I have a deep interest in but it rarely provides solutions. So the biggest reason why I want to do an MPA is learn how to solve societal issues rather than just talk about them. I have pretty much done a degree in public admin and want to do another one because I am still starving for knowledge. I took some time off school to work and I was not impressed with what I saw. Mind you I worked sales jobs but nonetheless, the people I encountered were not the type of people I want to spend every day of my life with. They were low lives who were totally oblivious to the world around them and were so content with so little. They are happy to make their 45 to 50k a year while getting shat on and disrespected by upper management. I went back to school and started to really entrench myself in the vast world of public admin and I fell in love. Leading me to want to pursue a masters. Comparing a masters in public admin to a masters in political science, with public admin I feel like I can give my future employer a level of analysis that i would not be able to have studying politics. I have experience working as a policy analyst for the Canadian government and I fell in love with the work. THIS IS TYPE OF KNOWLEDGE AND THE TYPE OF CAREER I WANT.
  3. Hello everyone! Hope all is well! I am a new member here and I am glad to have joined. I have a deep interest in applying to the Masters of Public Administration program at Carleton University here in Ottawa. In April (2014) I will be finished my undergrad in Public Administration at the University of Ottawa Politcs has always been an interest for me. I have always enjoyed political science. However, one of the things that bothers me about political science is the fact that it is rarely solutions based, which is one of the big reasons why I study public administration now and want to continue studies in the same field. I also have a huge admiration for the public service. Having done an internship as a policy advisor at a government department here in Ottawa, it really solidified my admire for the public service. Governing; and how to do it better has been fascinating me. I feel the Carleton program will open doors for me in not only in regards to mental stimulation, but also career paths. I have had an "academic renaissance". I started to take school much more seriously in the last two years of my undergrad. My GPA for the past two years (60 credit) is looking to be between a 7.8 and a 8.0 (out of 10). I wanted to ask you all about research interests. There are many policy fields that I am interested in but it is hard to pin-point. Even though I am interested in the course work option, should I still discuss research interests in the statement of intent? It also seems like it would be a good idea to contact a supervisor at the school before applying to discuss my research interests. Is this correct? Should I mention this academic renaissance of mine in the statement of intent? Or will they see the huge improvements in my transcript? On a side note, I have two very strong recommendations who are willing to be a part of my application and I am currently working on a third. Carleton requires two but I would like 3 just in case, as professors can be very forgetful at times.
  4. Economics in the field of public policy and international relations are very important. I myself am applying to a Masters Program and I am currently in a micro class. The reason for its important is the following. Government and austerity are two concepts that have become very intertwined recently. Any policy recommendations you make (either domestic or international) MUST be backed up with numbers. So having a strong foundation in economics will essentially make you a better analyst. So take it anyway, there is nothing wrong with a refresher. Hope this helps.
