  1. UMich is a top program so it's PhD program is very competitive, you might want to look at UMich's PhD's admission profile HERE I have no idea how many PhD students they admit every year.
  2. In my opinion I don't see getting a second MS degree worth it in your case, it will be way too costly and hence way too risky. My advice is to just stay at whatever your current job is and try to apply to engineering positions, I know it can be a lengthy, frustrating process, but I think it will payoff in the end.Something is bound to come along sooner or later.
  3. I think you should try 1-2 universities in the top 5 or so in your field, your profile is still very strong.
  4. That GRE score is very very low and will probably not meet the minimum GRE cutoff score for most universities, what I suggest to you is that you retake the GRE.I also got a low score and will be retaking the GRE in december, I emailed the universities and asked them if it was OK for my scores to reach them after their 15December deadlines and most of them replied saying it was OK. You should retake and try to get at LEAST AWA3.5, Q160, V155
  5. I think I will take your advice and send out e-mails in chunks, thanks to everyone for their input.
  6. Hello to All, I have noticed that universities often ask you put in the e-mails of your referees then each University then contacts your recommenders. This can cause problems when you are applying to many different universities as your referees will be receiving e-mails from different universities and then respond to each. How are people getting around this issue? Are there intermediaries that can be used to give references to the universities? (i.e each recommender sends his recommendation to a central place / website / service then the universities can then email the intermediary to get your references). Thank You, any input is always appreciated.
  7. I am not a Mechanical Engineer but my feeling is that you have a very good chance of getting into those UK universities (Liverpool should be fairy easy i think), A GPA of 3.55 should translate to a high 2.1 so you should be ok.
  8. Undergrad Institution: UK University, Should approximately be in World Top 75 for EE. Major(s): Electronics Minor(s): n/a GPA in Major: n/a Overall GPA Classification: 1.1 Length of Degree: 4 Years (MEng Degree) Position in Class: Above Average, I would say around 75th - 80th percentile Type of Student: International, Traditional, Male. GRE Scores: (Will Update with these) Q: V: W: Research Experience: No research experience apart from Bachelors Level research project. Awards/Honors/Recognitions: None Pertinent Activities or Jobs: None Any Miscellaneous Accomplishments that Might Help: None Applying for EE PhD at (Always changing my mind on these): [3] U Mich [4] UIUC [5] UCSD [6] Rice [7] Maryland Uni [7] Carnegie Melon University [7] Purdue [7] WashU [7] Penn State [9] Uni Hawaii @ Manoa
  9. Thank you for your input, I appreciate it, where do you get acceptance rate information from? Do you go to each university and search for the information or is there a place I can go to get all that information in one place?
  10. Hi, I have been thinking hard about what schools I intend on applying for an EE PhD at starting 2015, but the main problem I am having trouble with is gauging how (un)competitive my application is in relation to the schools I want to go to, so I would like opinions from people in this forum.I really don't want to end up with 9 rejections. About Me: -MEng Electronics from a relatively good UK school (Southampton): I predict I will have an accumulated average of around 72% - 73% by the time I apply, which I think should correspond to a GPA of around 3.7 - 3.8. -Research Experience: None -GRE: I haven't taken this yet but looking at the test I think I could score about 160 - 166 in the Quant section. Schools: *UC Berkeley *Cornell *UCLA *Michigan *Rensseleer Polytechnique Institute *WashU *Northwestern *Duke *Dartmouth Are these choices too optimistic, I know UC Berkeley and Cornell are probably reaches.Assume that I will get good references from my referees. Any input appreciated.
  11. In the UK you can jump straight to a 3-year PhD from a Bachelors degree (which also takes only 3 years), a lot of people do it, especially in scientific fields. And even if you opt for a masters degree, it will only take you 1 year to complete it not 2.
