  1. Hey guys, So I moved to the city my M.S. program was in 2 months early because that was when my prior lease ended, and I didn't have to deal with trying to get a new apartment when everyone else was hunting- still, ever since the luster of being accepted has worn off, I've found myself more and more bored. My friend and I keep going back and forth about how good it will be to actually be in classes where there will be something stimulating. Is anyone else beyond antsy for their classes to start? How are you coping? For me, I've got 30 days to go
  2. Hey OP,I know I'm a bit late here, but the internships in silicone valley at SJSU are superb. The curriculum is a bit more I focused, however.
  3. I also wanted to thank you all for being so amazing and supportive here. I hope to see you all in the future at conferences and stuff.
  4. I agree with everything above. Also, see if you can get accepted into a summer REU program for lab experience and networking opportunities. They help a lot!
  5. When I asked my adviser how he remembered so many journal articles and books he responded with: "I remember to not forget, most people do not". It sounded a bit condescending at the time, but he elaborated further by saying that many undergraduates have been trained to read articles for key pieces of information and don't bother to remember the author names or the year in which they were published, but if you read to remember and read to keep it in your mind for the entirety of your career, you'll begin to approach articles differently. It stuck with me, and I've been trying to apply his contextual style to my studies. It's definitely not the most sage of advice, but my adviser in undergrad was a man of few words.
  6. But what if they change books?! That would be awful. I might contact the faculty members in my program, especially if the book on the syllabus doesn't have a newer edition or was published in 2013/2014.
  7. I wish I knew what books I needed for my classes. I'd love to get a headstart on reading. And that shipping weight- damn.
  8. "Why don't you just get a job?" UGH. I don't know, maybe it's because a B.S. in Psychology isn't like a degree in Engineering? What "job" should I get in my field with just a B.S.? I think the most annoying thing is one of the things that remain unsaid. A lot of my friends on FB and the like haven't applied to grad school and have no intention to (for a large number of reasons). Ever since I started working in a research lab I was inundated with "Why are you bothering? Why don't you work somewhere that pays you?". When I began participating in other non-lab extracurriculars to help my applications, I was again met with "You should get a job so you have spending money!". Yeah, let me just set aside 20 hours a week to get a job on top of the labs and classes I'm involved in. People that don't want to apply to graduate school honestly don't get it. That's why I spend so much time on Gradcafe. You guys understand and aren't urging me to get a job. It really sucks to not be able to commiserate with my close friends.
  9. Hey guys, I was scrolling through the list of applicants that were awarded NSF GFRP and I didn't see any I/O applicants with an award. Is this typical? Has anyone received one or know anyone that has?
  10. Well, I also got into SJSU (and plan to attend there), and I know the director offered to send a list of current I/O students as contacts in case we wanted to chat with them about the program. Have you considered asking for their emails and seeing where they've interned and what they thought of the experience? Personally, the draw of Silicone Valley internships with a thesis was what made me decide to go with SJSU, but I don't know what TC has to offer. Have you looked at their courseload there? Do they offer classes/opportunities that would be more in line with your interests? Whatever you decide, I hope you have a good time. If you do decide on SJSU, let me know, I'm dying to talk about it with someone!
  11. Anyone going to San Jose State? I feel like the only one!
  12. Hello all, I know that graduate school is a great way to improve your writing abilities, but I was wondering if anyone knew of any books or materials I could study this summer before I enroll.
  13. Hey guys, So SJSU has I/O, Experimental, and Human Factors programs, and I was wondering if there was anyone here that was planning on attending this upcoming fall, or anyone who is already in attendance. I'd love to chat about the area and program!
  14. Hello all, Like many of you, I somewhat obsessively check the results page for programs that I expect to be sending out admission decisions soon. Recently, I saw the first result come back for the Master's program I applied to and the applicant that posted said they got accepted last Friday without completing their application. The applicant was as confused as I was. I didn't think programs accepted people with incomplete applications. I'm pretty much worried sick at this point and I'm thinking that they sent all of their acceptance emails Monday and they're likely waiting to hear back from their applicants/waitlist candidates before sending out rejection emails. I just don't know what to think of the whole situation. I mean, if they're accepting someone who didn't complete their application then I feel like I'm pretty much done for. Has anyone had this sort of issue before? Any advice?
