  1. For those of you who didn't get in to McGill and are waiting to hear back from Ontario schools, don't give up hope!! I was rejected last year by McGill but I was accepted by Western, Dal, and UofA. I know of 3 other people who were also rejected by McGill and were accepted by both UofT and Western. My personal theory is that McGill is looking for a very specific type of applicant and that the Ontario schools are looking for more diverse applicants. If anyone is trying to decide between schools and wants to know more about the program at Western, feel free to private message me. Good luck for April 1st everyone!
  2. toriec, don't give up hope! It is competitive and it's good to be aware of that going in but some people DO get in the first time around so you really just never know! I've got my fingers crossed for you and everyone else applying this year!
  3. Hi speechful11! When I applied last year, I did the following: In the volunteer experience description, I listed my role & the organization's name. In the duration section, I included how many months as well as how many hours per week or month. If I remember correctly, there was a place to enter "From Date" and "To Date" and that's where I put "present" if it was still ongoing. I'm not sure if they changed the format for this year but I included two examples of what I did last year below so hopefully that'll help! From Date 2013-02 To Date Present Volunteer Experience Description AQPA-Quebec Association for People with Aphasia Geographic Location Montreal, QC Duration 11 months, 3-6 hours/week Total Hours 95 hours Site Population Francophone, Anglophone, and multilingual adults with aphasia Activities Supported Conversation for Adults with Aphasia training. Facilitate a conversation group & computer lessons. Past work in choir & photography groups. From Date 2013-11 To Date Present Volunteer Experience Description Observation – Private Practice, (SLP's name here) Geographic Location Montreal, QC Duration 7 weeks Total Hours 14.5 hours (clinical reference) + 7 hours since Site Population Children with fluency, articulation & autism spectrum disorders; Parents of children with ASD Activities Observed individual therapy sessions. Observed & helped prepare for biweekly More Than Words (The Hanen Group) workshops & a video feedback session.
  4. Hi everyone! I wanted to quickly post here to see if I can help out in answering any questions you may have. I am currently in my first year at Western for SLP and still remember how stressful this time of year is. If there are any questions out there about Western, I'd be happy to answer them as best as I can. I didn't get a chance to read the whole thread (I started to and then realized how many posts there were lol). I'd also be happy to share my stats in private messages. Good luck with your applications and happy holidays!
  5. Hi Kirsten! I'm not sure if others have already addressed this issue as I haven't yet read through the entire thread. I just wanted to let you know that I am currently in my first year at Western and we have a classmate who is Canadian but did their undergraduate degree in the US. From my understanding, as long as you have the prerequisites and are competitive as an applicant, then you should be fine! p.s. Western is awesome
  6. I think the reason is that depending on how your grades from a semester appear on your transcript, it might not be a good reflection of what kind of student you are. For example, if you had all As and hypothetically a C in one semester and the C appears earlier on the transcript for that semester, it wouldn't be fair to you as a student to take the C. It's more representative of you as a student to take an average of that semester. Just to clarify though, this is only if you need to add extra credits to the subGPA to get to 20 credits and adding an extra semester will go over the 20 credits. Does this make more sense?
  7. To quickly add on to this, they will take the average of a semester if they need just a few courses to complete the 20 courses. So for example, if they reach 18 with your 2 most recent years, they will use your average from the semester immediately preceding the 2 years twice. Let me know if that makes sense lol!
  8. I just declined Dalhousie's offer! For those of you waitlisted, good luck!!!
  9. Hi everyone! I have been following this forum for the last few months and have finally decided to post as well. I was a first time applicant this year and I have been accepted to U of A, Western, and Dalhousie, waitlisted at Ottawa, and rejected from McGill. I'm also no expert on how the schools are making their decisions but I am open to sharing my stats for anyone who didn't get in I'm also hesitant to post stats on the forum but please PM me if you want info. On another note, any advice from anyone on how to pick between U of A and Western? Those are the 2 schools I'm most torn between!
