  1. Is he not? I feel like he's been courting students even this last round. Otherwise, Northwestern really seems like the place to be for early modern European art--Swan, and others.
  2. To those in the know (Condivi or anonymousbequest), what do you think about Penn, CUNY, Chicago and Northwestern? I'd be interested to get accounts of these schools from insiders. Of course sub-specialties matter (CUNY really now seems to be only a place for modernists.) What could you say about modernist offerings?
  3. Sounds really cool! We've got some overlap!
  4. I personally perform better when I anticipate a formal interview, even if it doesn't end up being so formal. For me, the more neurotically prepared I am, the more I can unwind when I find out the conversation isn't playing out so intensely. But then I can still sound put-together when I find out the tone of the interview isn't so heavy. Can I ask where the interview is? (You can PM me if you don't want to make it public!)
  5. Hi Schwartz! If you don't mind me asking, what professors at Chicago were you interested in? I'm also interested in post-war European art (mostly German.)
  6. Are there programs that DON'T accept master's students?
  7. Is there a specific language on the lists that you've actually studied or mention that you want to study? I got it too and I wonder if it might be automatic.
  8. Similar to another poster on here, I wrote a professor's name wrong/misspelled it on statement. It's about the equivalent of writing "Mike" for "Michael," or perhaps "Sean" for "Shawn" (either an alternative spelling or an over familiar shortening.) This professor isn't my POI (at least not the main one I'm applying to work with), but another very interesting scholar in the department who I mention. I also cite him in my writing sample and spell his name correctly. I know it's not a HUGE deal, but this particular school allows you to submit an "updated SOP" which won't replace your old one, but sit along side it. On the application site, it says that this is meant for updates and one's original materials can't be altered. Would it be a smart decision to upload a new SOP with just the name corrected? Or would it maybe frustrate them as a misuse of the ability to upload more materials? Or would it just call attention to something that wasn't a particularly big deal in the first place? Thanks for any help and input you can give anxious me!
  9. Thanks. Yes, that's exactly right about the percentiles. I'm not sure if you caught what I was trying to explain the first time around, though: the official sheet that they have reports the old values (because that official sheet was sent to these universities two years ago in 2012 when I had applied before.) Now when I self-report on the web application, I was putting the new percentiles, which differ from those on the official score report which they might check it against. Either way, from you and others it sounds like I need not worry about the discrepancy and everyone is aware of the problem! Big relief, thanks so much for the explanations!
  10. I took the GRE right when the new test came out and sent my scores to certain schools. Since then, the percentiles for two of my scores have changed. Some of those schools asked me to report the scores myself on the application, and I gave the new percentiles (which is also what it lists on my score report on the GRE website now), which are different from the official score report two years ago. What should I do? In the future, should I just report the old percentiles even if they're wrong now? Or is that misleading?
  11. Does the Whitney Independent Study program offer funding, a scholarship or stipend? If it does, how much is it?
  12. abilap, Thank you for your candid answers. They are very helpful! If I can ask, what do you think of the PhD programs at the IFA versus the CUNY grad program. You seem to think very highly of CUNY and I was wondering if the reservations you had about the IFA's MA program (the many positives notwithstanding) still held true for those at the doctoral level. You said the CUNY classes are more intense than those at the IFA, what did you mean? Thanks for any help you can give me! And congratulations to those lucky ones who get to pick between the two programs!
  13. Hi, M-ttle, Sorry to hear about Williams, but it sounds like you have found another good program. Congratulations. I am thinking about schools I want to apply to next year and Williams was on my list. I was wondering what made you say that it's traditionalist? I guess it might have that reputation, but I didn't really pick up on anything from the program's description of professor profiles (I guess aside from the strict language requirements and that they want your classes distributed, but that didn't seem unusual to me.) I'd just love to know what I might be getting myself in to with an application. Could you maybe point me to anything? Also, what do you mean that Williams is "formalist." I know what it means, but I wasn't sure what that means in terms of the program? And also where did you find this out? Sorry for so many questions! All of your (and all of you Grad-Cafe-ers') posts so far have been very helpful to me! I hope I can join some of you in your awesome schools soon!
