  1. @bridge_water... yes, NEU and MIT are less than 2 miles away, so we will be neighbors...
  2. You've heard it right, Boston is indeed really cool! Besides being THE intellectual hub, it provides you with tons of activities to do and lots of places to hang out with friends! Feel free to join this group for incoming students: https://www.facebook.com/groups/596463200444628/
  3. @Supriya84: Columbia is one of the best schools for CS out there, and there are tons of opportunities (the location helping the cause as well!)... especially, if you are interested in AI (machine learning, NLP etc.)! congrats on a great admit....
  4. To add to Hannah's great guidelines, as a general rule, if you intend to find some place in Hyde Park, try to be within the region marked by 50th Street and the 60th Street. You can also look up apartments at Craiglist (open to all). We have a CVS close to Hyde Park Produce and Walgreen's close to Treasure Island, so these are indeed very convenient places. Also, you can take advantage of UChicago's awesome shuttle service in addition to CTA buses, some of which are free (such as 171, 172) for UChicago students (you'll just need to show your UChicago ID).
  5. Albeit they are not ranked high for CS in general, University of Minnesota (twin cities) and Michigan State University are easily amongst the best schools for data mining. Just go to any program committee of top data mining conferences (KDD, ICDM, SDM, CIKM), you'll likely find a lot of faculty from these schools!
  6. yes, I also heard the grad housing is guaranteed for the first year grads, but am not sure about it... which graduate dorms are you looking for specifically? Everyone I met during the visit days seemed to opine that Tang Hall is the worst!

  11. Sleep is the most Nobel invention ever... the world would be so peaceful if everyone were asleep!
