Or what is the things you wish you had done during your master's studies prior to being a PhD candidate?

Hello everyone! I currently live in Quebec, Canada. I am currently studying in an English university for which I am allowed to submit any written work in French. I've always wanted to study abroad, especially for my graduate studies, for the experience and to be able to learn from a different perspective. But I am often blocked by the fact that I cannot submit written work in my first language. Don't get me wrong: I can read and understand English perfectly. I can also write, but I definetly need some grammar help (if you have not noticed already in this post). I do not see myself writing a master's or doctoral thesis in English. I am 100% comfortable with writing in French and I wish I could write in French anywhere I go. How flexible is the English language requirement in universities in Canada and even abroad? Thank you,

Hello! Thank you so much for your reply. It makes perfect sense. I will try to apply it. I can't wait to see if I am going to be admitted to the MSW! I feel so passionate about social work. I am also participating in my first scientific congress as a student-researcher later this year especially on my research topic. I will be competing for a student researcher prize for a poster that I am planning to make with my potential supervisor and another collegue from a community-based organization. We'll see what happens

Hello everyone! First off, sorry for my poor english grammar, I am a francophone. Like it is mentioned in my profile, I am applying this year to start a MSW next fall. I already have a clear topic in mind, something that I've been interested in for a long time and for which I do have work experience as well. One major aspect of my research topic is related to indigenous peoples. I am not indigenous myself although I am a woman of color and have faced racism and discrimination throughout my entire life. But for many months before sending my application, I was facing a dilemma. I felt like an imposteur to be wanting to study this topic. And I was concerned about reproducing colonial schemas by doing this research as an outsider. I am very well aware of the relationship between Western researchers and indigenous peoples. Especially when it comes to social work and indigenous peoples. I've come to terms that it was "okay" for me to research this topic when a proeminent indigenous activist told me that I am on the right track because I am questionning myself and my positionality in regards to this population. I've also begun to do volunteer work with indigenous peoples in order for me to "give something back" to the community, build a stronger relationship with them and not just "take information for my research topic". My potential supervisor is also non-indigenous. But she guarantees me work as a research assistant throughout my entire MSW studies. I have a great relationship with her and have been since the beginning of my undergraduate studies. I've worked for her before as well as a research assistant and I really like her clear approach and she is extremely available for students. Additionally, I feel comfortable in my current university and have always received tremendous support from the faculty and the school. For my MSW, I applied to another university, where there is actually an indigenous researcher that has accepted me as a supervisee. But I have never worked with her before, she will be on sabbatical leave when I'll come to the university also. But she is an expert on indigenous peoples and is indigenous herself. But I am worried because she will be gone when I will be starting my MSW. Has anyone been in these types of situations? How did you come to terms with researching on a specific community while being an outsider to that community?

I wanted to apply to UofT for the experience of studying in Toronto but I don't know how good their bursaries are over there, and if there is a possibility to submit a thesis in French even though the instruction language is English.

Hello everyone, this might come across as a silly question but I'll post it anyways. I've applied to do a MSW. I am considering the possibility of doing a PhD afterwards therefore it is why I chose the thesis option rather than the field placement option for the MSW. For those of you who are currently PhD candidates in social sciences, what is the ONE thing you wish you knew about doctoral studies when you were a master student?

Hello, I have a question for you. When applying to SSRHC, what years of study are considered the two last years of study? Is it the two last years of study of the entire program, or the two last years of study completed at the time of the application? I have achieved a first-class average in my second year in my program, but not in my first. I still had a good grade though but I highly doubt that it is a first-class average. However, I have research and volunteer experience. I'm afraid of not getting the scholarship because of that first year. I don't know how strict they are on this critieria.

I am finalizing my SSHRC application. I've been working on it for a couple of months now. I don't know if I'll get it, but my supervisor told me to give it a try. I'm nervous. We'll see what happens.
