    Fall 2018

To the person who just posted about the invitation to the University Of Michigan Ann Arbor recruitment weekend, congrats!!! I'm so happy for you! Did you get it just now? Via POI or DGS? And I would love to know what is your field if possible It's my top choice, so I'm super duper curious. Thank you!
  2. Hi there inner_outer, can you please tell us how and when did you hear from Stanford? I can see that you were declined (Sorry! I am pretty sure that I will be declined as well), but I haven't heard anything yet and in the spreadsheet only a handful wrote that they were invited to an interview. Thanks!
  3. It really does help! Thank you so much for sharing this information! I was in touch with a South-Asian professor, so it is at least good to know that it's not the same one. Another question, if it is alright with you - did you see any changes in the website? I don't know whether or not to contact them and ask them what my status is. I think that I will wait a few more days and see if anyone else heard from them... You are really lucky that they have already contacted you, better to get any answer than nothing at all! Thanks again! You are extremely helpful
  4. First, thanks for posting the results, it is very helpful! Sorry that you didn't get what you wanted, but an offer for an MA is still great I also applied there and I still haven't heard anything.... Can you please write us what else you found out? Did by any chance the professor write you if they already contacted the admitted students? And did she/he tell you when formal answers will be sent to the rest of the applicants? Also, if it is not too much to ask – which professor contacted you? Thank you anyway, and good luck!
  5. Sorry, but hey at least you heard good news from Emory Thanks for sharing, it's really helpful! Also, I formed a theory with one of the guys from this thread that they sent it to students that are already proficient in 2-3 languages, so perhaps it doesn't really mean anything... Thanks again for shedding light on the situation!
  6. I am interested in Middle Eastern art and expressed my wishes to learn Arabic and Persian. But even though my grades are great I don't think that I am such a great fit... That is why I was so surprised. But if we all got it I can only assume that it is automatic and sent to everyone. Oh well. On that note, what is better- the year-long fellowship or the summer fellowship? I think that studying a language alongside three seminars on the first year is pretty tough, but on the plus side the perks are better. Any thoughts?
  7. Hi guys, I applied to a Phd in art history and just received a mail from Uchicago encouraging me to apply to an FLAS fellowship. It seems like an automatic mail and in the content they say that it does not guarantee admittance, but is it a good sign that I am being seriously considered? Or perhaps they send it to all the U.S. citizen applicants? Did all of you get it as well? Here is the content of the mail: We are delighted that you have applied to the University of Chicago and are impressed by your academic preparation. We want you to be considered for a University of Chicago Foreign Language Area Studies (FLAS) academic-year fellowship based on your strong qualifications and the possibility that you will study an eligible foreign language next year if you are admitted. Eligible languages are listed here. We would like to forward your admissions application to the FLAS fellowship committee. For you to be considered for this competition, we ask that you fill out the general FLAS application form (attached) and submit it through your account at https://apply-humanities.uchicago.edu/apply/status/ by the end of the day Friday, February 6. When you log in to your status page you may submit it to the “Upload Materials” section. You do not need to submit additional materials (i.e. statement, language recommendation) as we can draw them from your application for admission. Agreeing to compete for a FLAS fellowship does not mean that you will be extended an offer of admission. However, the timing of the FLAS decisions is such that we need to ask you at this early date to consider competing for this fellowship. If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know. Best wishes, Thanks!
  8. Thanks guys! Do you know if it means that my grades are high enough to apply if they sent me the mail? Because my GRE wasn't that great in the first place (v-157 Q-158 E-4.5 for an international student) and the program i'm interested in is super competitive (the mail was sent from the general admissions office, not the specific department). Chicago is one of my top choices, but I don'y wan't to get my hopes up...
  9. Thanks for your reply! I took the GRE and the TOEFLT but didn't ask to send my grades to the university of Chicago. I thought that it must have been ETS, but that's a bit weird because they charge 25$ to send your scores to additional universities, so why would they do that for free? Do you know if it means that my grades are high enough for the university?
  10. Hey guys, I'm an international student and I just received a general mail from gradadmissions@uchicago.edu encouraging me to apply to their graduate school. It was obviously sent to a wide range of students and it is not from the specific department I'm interested in, But it got me thinking - how do they even know me? I haven't sent them my GRE or TOEFL scores yet, and I'm an international student and they obviously don't approach every student in the world. So what does it mean? did any of you get the mail? does it mean that my score are high enough for them or should I just not take it seriously. I copies the content of the mail for you: Dear Iris, Since 1892, scholars at the University of Chicago have been transforming society with a commitment to creative inquiry. More than 80 Nobel laureates — 16 percent of all recipients since the award was first given — have been associated with the University of Chicago, including 8 currently on the faculty. For 20 consecutive years, our graduate students have won more Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad Fellowships than students at any other U.S. educational institution. From world-renowned astronomers to Academy Award-winning directors, our graduate alumni exemplify a legacy of accomplishment across every Division and Professional School. They include major authors (Philip Roth, AM'55), leaders in international banking (World Bank chief economist Justin Yifu Lin, PhD'86), national broadcast journalists (PBS national correspondent Ray Suarez, AM'93), famous scientists (Edwin Hubble, PhD'17), and winners of MacArthur Fellowships, Guggenheims, and Fields Medals. More than 157,000 UChicago alumni form a network that touches more than 125 countries and exemplify a stellar legacy of accomplishment reflected in every University of Chicago degree. Graduate and professional students who enter UChicago have an unparalleled opportunity to work with a community that produces ideas consistently recognized for their impact on the world. You can learn more about our wide variety of degree programs, student life, and resources, by exploring the Graduate Admissions website:gradadmissions.uchicago.edu. As you consider your own graduate education, we hope you consider visiting us and applying to join our community of scholars. Sincerely, Deborah Nelson Deputy Provost for Graduate Education Thanks!
