  1. I completed my Bachelors of Engineering in Information Technology back in 2007. Following that I worked as a Programmer Analyst for an MNC for 2 years and 8 months. I am applying for a Masters in Journalism for fall 2015. I am a little confused about the 3 people I should ask to write an LOR. 1. I have requested a previous manager at the organisation I was employed full-time with to write one for me probably emphasizing on my skills in terms of computers and programming and about the extra curricular stuff I did while I was working. 2. I currently work as a Freelance Writer for a popular online magazine (Lifestyle + Women); I have asked the Associate Editor to write one for me talking about my skills as a writer. 3. I did a part-time job (for about six months) as the Blogger and Editor for an NGO which works for women and children for a war-torn area in India so I can ask the founder to write an LOR for me. OR 3. I can ask a professor from the university where I studied Engineering to write one for me but that person wouldn't say anything about my writing skills. It would be more related to my academics and may be some extra curricular participation. What do you suggest would hold more prominence? I have done a lot of writing other than this but these are the best sources I can think of. Please help. I have to be really fast with this.
  2. I don't have the time to retake it. I talked to a few people in the NYU who made it to journalism programs with a 306 or 307 last year. I don't know may be it does make a difference when you're not born and brought up in an English speaking country though I undertook my entire education in the English language (I am based in India). Is it really so awful? I wish I wanted to do a Masters in Engineering. But, my passion doesn't really lie there. Thanks for the reply though!
  3. I gave my GRE last year and I scored a 322 ( Verbal: 154, Quant: 168, AWA: 4.0). Also, I scored a 112 on the TOEFL. I am looking forward to applying to some Journalism programs in the US ( more so in the field of Art, Culture and Criticism) and I can't decide which universities would be the right ones with this score. I have a Bachelors in Engineering and I worked as a Software Engineer for about 2.5 years. I have relevant writing experience that includes virtual internships with websites and magazines and a good amount of freelance writing for places. I also host a blog here: http://readstuffwithme.wordpress.com I plan to apply to the following : 1. USC 2. Northwestern 3. NYU 4. Boston University 5. Northeastern university I know some of these may be in the way-too-ambitious slot but I'd like to know if any of you has a good idea about these and whether my scores look good for these universities. Also, I'd love to go through suggestions about more J-schools that might be appropriate for me.
  4. I gave the GRE in October 2013. I got a 154 in Verbal and 168 in Quant which makes the total score as 322. I scored 4 in the AWA section. I wasn't particularly happy with any of these scores. I did my Bachelors of Engineering in Information Technology and worked as an Engineer for 2.5 years. I wish to do a Masters in Journalism that's more so on the Art and Culture side (food and travel included). I have a blog that's followed by a lot of people and has had some good hits in the past two years where I have written about a whole lot of subjects like women issues, travel, the Middle East, world news, personal commentaries etc. I have also done virtual writing or journalism internships with many organisations based in the US. I have had my articles published at many places online as well. I am not someone who is deeply interested in politics or current affairs. As already mentioned, I am more into the journalism that involves Art and Culture and the humanitarian work. I really want to apply to Medill or NYU (esp the MA in Art, Culture and Criticism). Do you think that I have a chance of getting accepted or should I lower my aspirations a bit? I am based in India and I probably need some scholarship or funding as well. I am pretty confused about the colleges I should apply to. Can anybody help?
