  1. I'm currently deciding whether to accept an offer to a liberal arts PhD. I applied to this school early, before I had fully narrowed my area of interest, and while there are several professors peripheral to my subject area, there isn't really anyone specializing in my research interests. Offers from other schools have been unfeasible due to location or financials. I've spoken to the DGS who was kind and supportive but didn't really offer a straight solution to this problem. So, is it worth it?
  2. Thanks so much fullofpink for taking the time to give such comprehensive and helpful advice. I feel a lot calmer after reading it!
  3. Oh! I was under the impression that the test had changed quite significantly since 2011. Is this not the case?
  4. Hi! I 'inherited' some GRE study books from the person previously in my teaching position/apartment. They're a few years old. Are these still useful? My country doesn't have gen. ed. courses in undergrad, so I haven't taken any math classes since I was 15 years old. I need all the help I can get! And I don't want to mess around learning things that aren't in the test anymore. Thanks!
  5. Hi there, I got my BA in Art History outside the US/UK and now am considering applying for grad programs in the US. In undergrad, it was never suggested to specialize in a specific area and I took courses that covered a broad range of subject areas. Now I'm looking at further study, I've found a lot of advice on choosing schools based on your subject area, preferred faculty etc. and I'm feeling really self-conscious about my lack of specialization. So, how did you find your specialization? How did you figure out what direction you wanted to go in? Asking "What interests you?" hasn't been very helpful to me: I'm interested in everything! I've also been out of school for a couple of years in teaching positions, so that is adding to the difficulty. Looking for some realistic advice. thanks
