  1. Does anyone have a Greek keyboard on their Windows 8 laptop? I'm looking for something that can work in a Microsoft Word document - I like to type out certain passages that I'm studying in Latin and mark them up - it takes too long to write long Greek passages hahaha. I tried using the "symbol" font in Microsoft, but I couldn't get past the fact that they don't use the external sigma.
  2. Got into Arizona! I am very excited! Just awaiting words on funding
  3. Isn't there a way to talk about my journey with the languages in a positive way? In Latin, I felt everything this semester start to click and I feel really confident in my abilities. In Greek, I'm getting there. I want to communicate that learning both of the languages has enhanced my abilities as a future scholar and because I've had to work harder to understand and be good at reading the languages, I would be a better professor because I can relate to students.
  4. ^B average in classical languages, not N, haha. And the program I'm applying to is U of AZ.
  5. I am a classics major applying to grad school in classical archaeology. I have barely a 3.2 GPA due to crummy grades in gen eds and about a N average in my classical language classes. I'm worried about this! However, I may have more research experience than other applicants (2 independent studies, 3 paper presentations at undergrad conferences, and field work). I also was a leader in the classics and archaeology clubs. Two people who I want to supervise my thesis are interested in working with me but I still have to win over the rest of the department. Does anyone have a story similar to mine that ended in success/acceptance? Do I have a decent shot?
  6. I have barely a 3.2 overall GPA due to some crummy grades in gen ed classes. I have a B average combined in the classical languages (3 years of Latin and 2 years of Greek). I am at the point in Latin where things are really starting to click, and I'm proud of my progress. In Greek I am not quite there yet but I feel positive that things will only go up. These things are causing me some anxiety about being admitted into my dream program at U of AZ - both of the staff members who I want to work with are interested in what I want to do my thesis on, but I still have to win over the rest of the department. I do however, have a lot of research experience, perhaps more than a lot of other applicants (2 independent studies, 3 paper presentations at undergrad conferences, field work, which included a special project with the director and lab supervisor duties), leadership positions in classics and archaeology clubs, and a grant from CAMWS for my fieldwork this past summer. I for sure have two, possibly three solid recommendations. Do you think I still have a decent shot of getting admitted into the program?
  7. Ok, thanks! That was really helpful. How much time should I talk about how my undergrad experience has prepared me for grad study? Or should I just worry about that on my CV? UA asks that in our letter of intent we write about our professional goals and ambitions, why I want an advanced degree, and what emphasis I will pursue.
  8. Does anyone have any suggestions for what order to write a successful personal statement in (i.e., should I start off talking about why the program interests me, what I can bring to it, or what I have done in the past to make me a good fit for the program)?
  9. Hello, I am planning on applying to University of Arizona for an MA in Classical Archaeology. It has been my top choice for over two years. Does anyone have a format/outline/order suggestion for writing my personal statement?
  10. Ok, that makes sense. I will bust my butt working on grant proposals then (after all, isn't that what a lot of us will be doing throughout our careers? =] ).
  11. Hello everyone, When I get accepted into a graduate program this spring is it at all common to get money to go towards my MA research this coming summer? I started an independent study at my field school which I would like to continue and expand on for my Master's Thesis, and I was wondering if that is something that is typically done - to give accepted students money for research the first summer before fall semester?
  12. Well, German and Italian are the languages that I was planning on learning. I only picked French because Italian 101 wasn't available last semester and didn't fit in with my required classes this semester. The French class didn't teach grammar or anything related to reading, it was all for touristy study abroad programs...ended up with a C. But considering my research experience and skills, I hope that wouldn't be a yes or no factor. I have been teaching myself Italian in my spare time and bought a grammar book.
  13. Thanks! That was indeed helpful =) University of Arizona expects applicants to do well on the Analytical Writing (makes sense), and a combined score of 1000 for the Verbal and Quantitative parts, or the equivalent, though I am not sure how that stuff is scored. I am focusing on Roman archaeology and combining it with social history - I want to focus especially on slaves, freedmen, gladiators, etc. I'm interested in anything from the Late Republic to the High Imperial era, and even Late Antiquity. I want to keep studying in Italy but also do work in Spain, Greece, and England throughout the years. What do these schools mostly look for in applications? I will be emphasizing my research experience, activity/leadership in classics and archaeology clubs, current work from my field school, and a couple of awards. I've done excellent work in all of my history, classics and archaeology courses, but my overall GPA is not exactly stellar due to gen ed courses and a crappy French class...haha, is that a big deal? It certainly ain't bad, but it isn't wowing.
  14. Hi! I have narrowed down my choices to McMaster, UPenn's Art and Archaeology of the Mediterranean World doctoral program, and Arizona. Has anyone applied to these places and was successful? Any tips for practicing for the GRE?
