  1. Do you mind sharing with me the MSY craiglist on FB? I have been unsuccessful in searching for the apartment I want thus far...thanks heaps!
  2. Mine was 3.95 by the time I apply to PhD programs. I guess your GPA should not be lower than 3.7 (just trying to cast a wider ballpark). Ideally 3.8-4.0.
  3. Hi I'll be at MSU next year for History. I wish to bike to campus. Which neighborhoods do you recommend that will make life easier for biker? Thanks in advance!
  4. I also suggest you look at Michigan State University. I know they have at least 3 historians of Russia and Lewis Siegelbaum is a big name in the field. I met him during the prospect's weekend last month.
  5. Hi everyone, I am looking for a studio or a one-bedroom apartment, preferably near campus. If not, I would try to look for a place near from a bus stop. I am still debating whether I should get a car. Would you give me some suggestions in terms of where to start? What are some of the reliable management companies in the regions that I can look into? Thanks in advance!

    Buffalo, NY

I am from the Buff so I think I can offer some clarifications as well as advices. You can survive in Buffalo without a car, but unless you really really hate owning a car, I recommend you to consider buying one as an option. Public transporation sucks in Buffalo. The bus system is very fickle and not frequent enough. The subway is a little better (there is one line that runs every 20-25 minutes back and forth from South Campus to downtown area) and stops running at midnight. If you rent an apartment downtown, it's highly recommended that you find an apartment within walking distance from the subway line because I find the bus system unreliable. You can take the subway to University at Buffalo's south station stop, walk 2 minutes to the university shuttle (called the Stampede), and in case you wish to go to North campus, it will take another 20 minutes. In short, it can take you up to a total of 1 hour or even more to commute to North campus using the public transportation system. This is even worse during the 6-month long frigid winter at Buffalo. So make careful decisions if you decide to go to school this way. About living area, downtown-wise I recommend the Elmwood village (usually more expensive on average but social life is great and the streets are pretty with lots of bars, bookstores, coffee shops, etc). Allentown is also good but it can be noisy sometimes because of the clusters of cool, hippie bars around that area. You can also consider living in nearby cities such as North Tonawanda, Williamsville, and/or Niagara if you are willing to commute by car. Apartments are nice and rent is usually cheaper. The area around north campus has good housing but it's in a surburban area and there's not much to offer in terms of social life. I used to live in that area for a year and it was unbreably boring for me. I just do not recommend you to live around south campus (the University Height area) because there are a lot of undergrads living around, which usually involved hectic weekend parties and gatherings. The rent is super cheap but you get what you pay for. Please let me know if you want to know more about any aspects of the city.
  7. I am heading to Michigan State University in the fall. After a while debating among options, I have decided to go with program that I think is the best fit. My current history department just recently hired a MSU PhD so that's also a good excuse for me to think I made the right decision. Nothing feels better than finally being able to move on from this phase and be productive in other endeavors!
  8. I will be turning down Toronto tomorrow. I decided not to leave the US after all.
  9. Ashiepoo, I am having exactly the same experience as you do. After I use funding as an elimination test, my top evaluative parameters now are adviser (also with a potential committee in mind), strengths of the program esp subfield, other complementary strengths such as cognate disciplines, graduate certificates, professionalization, external funding etc. It is most difficult when you (oddly) get admitted to programs that are not entirely comparable. Comparing them is like comparing apples to oranges because they have different niches. Choosing to go to one place will shape your future scholarship very differently than if you go to another place. This is the dilemma I am facing and it's pretty tiring because I have been debating with myself almost every day now. I am glad to leave Toronto aside though because I decided to stay in the US for many reasons. So that's a nobrainer for now. Good luck to all of you and hopefully we will conclude this season soon with a choice that we'll never regret!
  10. Congratulations everyone! Meanwhile I am still debating....
  11. Thanks everyone! It's pretty informal from the chair but he indicates that official letter will come in the mail soon. I haven't checked that page since I submitted my application so I am not sure.
  12. I got in the University of Toronto!! They just literally sent me email 5 minutes ago....
  13. I am still making pros and cons list, and perhaps I will arrange phone calls with some of my potential advisers to clarify several things before I can finalize my decision. I sort of anticipate to send out enrollment decision at the beginning of April. Still trying to distract myself from this by focusing on my master thesis right now...
  14. Hawaii sounds like a perfect place for you then. The department is huge in Asian history (I believe there are 11 of them in the Asian field in total). I guess you want to work with Yuma Totani? I study diaspora and migration in colonial Southeast Asia. I have been awarded the TA-ship and understand that there are people on the waiting list. I will try to make a decision as soon as possible!
  15. That must have been me, but their funding is not good compared to my other offer (despite its being among the top in my field) so I am very inclined to turn down their offer soon. But how nice it is to be able to go to UH! What is your area of specialization?
