  1. Hello, I am making my resume for graduate school. I am wondering how I should list my GPA. I am currently in my last semester of my undergrad and will have more grades which will change my currently GPA but my first applications will be due before I get those grades. Should I just list them as is on my resume and note that the number is not the total? Thanks for any help y'all can provide!
  2. Hello all, I am currently working on my statement of purpose for graduate school (applying for sociology). I am unsure if I should include a peace of information as it sort of makes me look bad. However, including it might be necessary as my application may seem to be missing something without it. Sorry for the long explanation but I need to put it in context...I am published on a research paper. I was working for a professor (employed in his lab) in a separate field (human-computer interaction). Things went south between my boss and I because he decided not to pay me for work I did (I received hourly wages). I threatened legal action and got the president of my university involved which ended with me being paid but also resulted In a poor relationship between this prof and myself. In my statement of purpose I have a section where I discuss this issue to explain why I don't have a letter of recommendation from the professor whom I worked for and am published with. I spin the conflict to say that I stand by my ethics/ morals and can stand up for myself. I'm just not sure if people reviewing my application will expect to see a letter of recommendation from this professor if I don't explain why I don't have one. Also, I do have other profs who have agreed to write me letters (I will have 3 letters). I will elaborate if my explanation is not clear. Thanks for any advice y'all can provide!
  3. Thanks for all of your responses. I can see what y'all mean about there being no such thing as a safety school. I have much to think about.
  4. Hello fellow sociologists, I will be applying to various sociology graduate programs this coming fall. My interests are-- by far and wide--qualitative. I don't know my chances of getting into the top schools but I will be applying to some regardless, as well as, applying to some mid tier and "safety schools". If it helps, more specifically than qualitative methods, I am interested in ethnography, cultural sociology, environment, technology, and knowledge. Currently my list of schools is as follows: Top tier- University of Wisconsin-Madison UC Berkeley Northwestern UCLA Mid tier- UT Austin NYU Yale ??? Safety- Texas A&M Washington State University CU-Boulder University of Oregon I am not sure if my mid tier and "safety school" selections truly fit into the categories I am putting them in. I want to be sure I apply to a range of schools with strong qualitative programs. Could anyone suggest some strongly qualitative programs that I should look into? Again, I think I need to confirm and/or adjust the mid tier selections. I can provide more info if need be (I would be happy to do so since you would be helping me out). Thanks in advance for any help y'all can provide!
