  1. Hi, so I am in contact with my professor in NTU Singapore for a dual PhD program. Basically you spend two years here and two years in CMU and get two PhD degrees in the end (funded), in robotics/mechanical engineering. I will just skip the interest/motivation part, I am keen. But I am rather worried about job prospect after PhD, more and more PhDs are coming up and it seems that job opportunities can't cope with it. Do you guys think its worthy to take up the scholarship? Personally, I think the bright point is the CMU degree. Anyone knows how top school PhDs are doing nowadays on average? Please feel free to comment. Thanks in advance!
  2. just something about money concern: would u consider a part time master degree? i am doing that in singapore, basically i get salary and pay for tuition fee, quite nice arrangement, i get to save some money too. i am not sure if US schools offer this kind of arrangement... or wat about overseas? if i am not wrong, national university of singapore waives tuition fee for staff:) i am expecting my master in few months time, whether master helps or not, i think it really depends on which direction u want to go, relevant industry/research should be +ve, but switching fields like to finance/investment might be -ve, u must be prepared that people will ask u why. talking about research experience, i used to think master is like optional, but now i think my master has given me a very good time of understanding wat research is and closing up the gap between undergraduate courses and state of the art. at least comparing myself now and 1.5 years ago, i would say i have a much better idea of wat research is and wat the potential problems are. so i can really go on to implement my ideas/do something and save the time of reading. also publication, if i start phd after a master, i would have almost 2 more years of time for publication. i am less stressful, also it is more likely that i can produce much better publication. i guess people are not so concerned with whether u get ur phd +2/3 years from the rest, but more about ur publications. just my personal comments, no offence to direct phd candidates:) i just think that i am not good enough to do a direct + good phd.
  3. just a short update, my friend with kinda similar profile makes it to georgia tech, but he is without master, bachelor+research work. comments pls~
  4. Hi all, would appreciate all your opinions... Attached below is a summary of my profile: University: Nanyang Technological University, Singapore Bachelor: Mechanical Engineering (Specialized in Mechatronics) Not under GPA system (my rough calculation: overall 3.3+, last 2 years 3.7), top 15% of the cohort (my guess), out of 800 people. Master: Computer Engineering (Research: Computer Vision) GPA (3 subjects, A-, A-, B-): 4/5 or 3.3+/4. CMU system: 3.67, depending on the GPA system used. Possible letter of top 10-15% from my boss, my boss is quite famous in this area, he has overall citations of more than 500 times and good connection with the top researchers in this field. Work experience Research staff in university, area: computer vision, 1 year +. Two attempts to rank 1 conference, planning for another 1. Publication Podium presentation in a top rank worldwide conference, usually less than 5% acceptance rate, <50 selected out of thousands of submissions. Second Author/Third Author (Boss, my colleague then I, depending on how boss arranges, second if he is not the first). It is a project level submission after few years of work. Assuming there is another rank 1 conference paper. I guess these conferences are comparable to journal with impact factor of 5-6. Planning to apply to robotics/computer vision (mechanical/ee/cs faculty). Maybe apply to Texas Austin/Georgia Tech/Harvard/CMU/Toronto/Mcgill/UBC... I actually made a similar post before, but without publication that time, conference results just released this morning. Kinda excited by the results:) Thanks a lot.
  5. Would appreciate more comments on my profile...
  6. Thanks Joro. I am not applying this year, in fact the deadlines are almost over. I am working on a paper to top tier conference in my field. Would one or two publications at top tier conferences make my application look great? I am just concerned if my bachelor and master results have already killed me. I guess these conferences are comparable to journal with impact factor of 2.+. We actually submitted twice, first rejected and second is under review, both top tier. But I think I won't get much weight from it since I will be the third author only at most. Now planning for my own submission. I just wonder how people would see my school, its does very well in many global rankings but mm... 30+ in Times technology part. How would you all living far far away from Singapore see it? Any idea of chances if I go europe (excluding UK, very hard for funding now) like ETH/EPFL/TU DELFT? ETH my friend told me if I am in the top 20% of the cohort in my school (they recognize it as top one) then should not be a problem. Thanks a lot for your help.
  7. Hi all, I am from Singapore. I actually have strong interest in research and I want to be a professor in future. I would like to do my PhD in US/Canada but my profile does not seem that good. People around have been telling me that I am thinking too much but mmm... I don't know, would love to listen to your opinions. I understand that there is no guarantee, just want to get a rough sense of where I stand now... Attached below is summary of my profile: University: Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (Anyone knows this school? Haha...) Bachelor: Mechanical Engineering (Specialized in Mechatronics) Not under GPA system (my rough calculation: overall 3.3+, last 2 years 3.7), top 15% of the cohort (my guess), out of 800 people. Master: Computer Engineering (Research: Computer Vision) GPA (3 subjects): 4/5 or 3.3+/4. Planning to apply to robotics/computer vision (mechanical/ee/cs faculty). Maybe apply to Texas Austin/Georgia Tech/Harvard/CMU/Toronto/Mcgill/UBC... Thanks.
