  1. I have never heard an argument against writing POIs prior to applying. What is the concern? If it is not pushy, but is a personal, informed, introduction, I didn't know it could be a negative.
  2. P.S. I'm not suggesting that you make it a plan or habit to deceive. But… no one will know why YOU spent time in Hawaii. A spiritual quest, love of nature, political action, personal relationship, these are all deeply human motivations that can lead us to veer from the standard path. Maybe you were just getting drunk on the beach, but for all practical purposes you are the only one who will ever know for sure why you chose this path for yourself. Admission committees are looking for a few things, do you have ability, are you driven to complete your work, do we want this guy around. Do what you can to show them you have ability, responsibility, and drive. If and when the question of the time in Hawaii come up, be ready to truthfully present it in its best light. If I were sure you weren't a flake, I'd see it as a positive.
  3. I cannot speak with any authority. But I think you will have a shot. If your GREs and GPA, seem on track with the averages at the schools, and your supervisor can say that you are a person that handles responsibility and has drive, then I don't think your dalliances will hurt you. That FE was a good move. It alone shows ability and that you are motivated.
  4. Hello, I'm going to be going for my Au.D. next year. I should have a good application package 330 or so combined GRE, good references, ok GPA in Neuroscience and Engineering, lots of research experience, etc. Here's the issue, I NEED to get funded. I have a wife and two kids and I am in my 40s, so I can't just run up 100K in loans (I'll be 70 before I pay them off). So have any of you gone to: NIU, Iowa, Northwestern, U of I Urbana Champaign, I U Bloomington, U W Madison, Colorado Boulder, Utah State U ? I actually have experience as a grad student so I know the general story, I know PhDs get better funding, etc. etc. etc. I need specifics for THESE Programs. Do you go to one of them? Or did you get offered funding when recruited? Did you get funded at one of them? Or do you know a lab-mate or friend who is getting funded as an Au.D.? What can you tell me? I'm most concerned about a school giving me funding for the first year, and then leaving me in the cold for years 2 - 4. I will work as hard as humanly possible to make sure that they would never want to do this, but I need to know what I'm getting myself into.
