  1. With the academic job market being so tight, is it even worth getting a PhD from a lower tier (not top 20) school if your goal is to be a professor? If I don't get accepted to a top 20 school, would it be a good idea to rethink my plans all together? What are the odds of getting a full time position if you are not in a top school?
  2. I have been looking at different programs and there seems to be wide variety on how long it takes to complete a PhD, depending on the school. I have seen schools saying that it will take anywhere from 4-7 years (for programs that do not require a masters beforehand). Anyone have insight as to why this is? Should my opinion of a program be effected by how long they say it takes to complete a PhD?
  3. Is there anywhere we can see the selectivity of different graduate schools for PhD programs in Sociology? In other words, what percentage of those who apply that are made offers? Thanks!
