  1. This might be helpful specifically for social psych labs: https://my.spsp.org/Jobs/Job-Search In general, the society associated with your subfield will usually include these types of postings in their job tab on their website. Definitely a good place to start.
  2. Last year I got HM with some iffy you-could-do-better kinds of comments and this year I got the most glowing reviews I've ever seen in academia and NOTHING. I'm more confused about this process than ever before. Oh well, that was the last chance for me. A sincere congratulations to my (apparently flawless) colleagues who snagged a win! Obviously there are fewer awards than there are deserving candidates, so for those who missed out, don't be discouraged!
  3. Our odds are (supposedly) equal, as they are supposed to be proportional to the number of applicants within each subfield... but since those odds are so poor for any one person in particular, we're all equally likely to not get it, so at least we can all commiserate about our chances? 2 - 4 humans does sound worse than 12 to 14 though... but imagine if you get it, you'd know you're within the top 2-4 humans in your field* (*who applied to NSF this year), much more impressive than top 15! So, there's a small silver lining on the just-in-case-you-get-it side of things! And, if you don't get it, you can continue to believe you're still number 3 (to 5) rather than being somewhere top 20 or further... Okay, I think this tangent means I'm officially in freak-out levels of anticipation. Anyone ever wonder if the NSF folks read this stuff for giggles on their lunch breaks? I would... lol
  4. I did!! Fingers crossed!! NO ONE is calling me tonight. I'm just going to sleep lol the next day was rough.
  5. :Last year I decided not to stay up, but my (then) partner who worked nights was going to call me if and only if I got it. So, checking the website and seeing my name, I was called in the middle of the ******* night. So I wake up, heart racing at the possibility of a HUGE raise and scientific freedom, but like the pessimist I am at any hour of the day I said "read to me the exact status you see. Is it Awarded or Honorable Mention?", "Honorable Mention, that means you won right?".... Let this be a lesson folks, if you're going to have someone disturb your precious sleep to tell you good news, make sure they know exactly what they are and are not supposed to call you for. Don't get me wrong, I'm super honored to have gotten an HM but I also really really love sleep. If nothing else I hope this provided a laugh in this time of stress, best of luck to everyone tonight in both the NSF outcomes and in getting some sleep at some point!
  6. Not convinced?? SEVERAL sleep deprived scholars have poured over message boards and compiled the notification dates and times from previous years and have come back to us with the conclusion that our fate awaits us at 3AM this night (okay, technically tomorrow morning). Additionally, they have noted maintenance on the very same night! It must be a sign! I wonder what a day without anxiety or stress feels like...
  7. I think that's when they take the water out of juice, yeah? I'm trying to convince myself I didn't get it so that i'll be able to sleep tonight (and maybe be pleasantly surprised in the morning!) I should mention this plan is not working well thus far.
  8. Ooops! Good call... maybe I shouldn't stay up, looks like I'm already in need of sleep!
  9. There is maintenance on the site scheduled for both tonight AND tomorrow night!! What does it mean? Which one will it be??
  10. Like most things, the extent to which it matters probably depends on your program. For our field, we apply directly to an adviser and typically students stay with a current grad student from that lab or department. It's not only a great time for you to ask questions and see what grad school life is like outside of the office, it's also a great chance for the grad students to see what you are like outside of the rigorous interview process. They'll be your colleagues, you have to get along with them too. If all goes well, they could really talk you up, but if you don't give them that chance to get to know you better they won't have that opportunity. That said, it could go the other way. If you are rude or do something strange they may not have great things to report. In this scenario, the extra time with the graduate student is functionally an extension of the interview.
