  1. Anyone thinking about going to Northwestern DGP? I like the program but not sure if I can handle the weather and the high cost of living near that area. Any advice from Chicago natives or people already attending/thinking about going to Northwestern DGP would be much appreciated! Thank you!
  2. Does anyone know the BMS dates? Anyone know if UCLA IMMP is done with their invites?
  3. dang how did you find out? I've been trying to contact them but they never reply. sad news but thanks for the update!
  4. Anyone know if ucsd bms or ucsf bms is done sending out interview invites? I just want to know so I can stop hoping for a miracle. Thanks!
  5. On my scripps app it says the application has been reviewed by the graduate office. Does this mean the adcoms already looked at it and haven't told me the decision or does this just mean all my documents have been received? or does this mean I'm rejected because I didn't get an invite after the review?
  6. Undergrad Institution: Big public top 30 research school Major(s): Cell Biology Minor(s): Music GPA in Major: 3.68 Overall GPA: 3.65 Position in Class: average Type of Student: Domestic female GRE Scores (revised/old version): Q: 161 (80%) V: 159 (81%) W: 4.0 (56%) B: Research Experience: 1 year at a plant biology lab studying plant hormones, 6 month internship at an algae biofuels lab, 6 months in a developmental immunology lab in Japan, and 1 year at a biotech company working with HIV-1. Awards/Honors/Recognitions: provost honors, bunch of scholarships to study abroad in Japan. Pertinent Activities or Jobs: TA during undergrad, also created a summer internship program at my current job to mentor high school and college students interested in working in the biotech field. Any Miscellaneous Accomplishments that Might Help: I don't know if this helps- lots of financial hardships, had to couch surf for several months after graduating undergrad because I wanted to finish up my internship, worked my butt off to get full funding for my trip to work in a lab in Japan. I guess tons of other people probably experience these kind of situations but I guess it won't hurt to mention it (?) Special Bonus Points: 2 of my LORs are from PIs that are well known in their field and also are directors of their departments. The last LOR is from my employer who has a lot of connections in the departments I am applying to at University of Washington. Applying to Where: UCSF- BMS University of Washington- MCB & Pathobiology UCLA- Biosciences UCSD- BMS UCB- MCB Scripps Northwestern-DGP University of Chicago- BMS UNC Chapel Hill- BBSP I'm pretty worried about my average GPA and GRE scores and I'm kind of regretting now not looking at more lower tier schools. Also, my research experience is kind of all over the place, jumping from plant to algae to autoimmune diseases and eventually HIV, and although I do have an explanation for why I still don't think it'll look as good as working at the same lab for multiple years. Although it's kind of last minute, does anyone have any advice for if I should drop some of these and try to apply to lower tier schools?
  7. Currently I have letters from a well known PI- head of the department, a postdoc, and a staff scientist at a biotech company. Would it hurt my application if all three are not tenured professors? I feel like the three I chose know me really well so they can write strong letters, but I can try asking a professor and the CSO of the biotech company.
  8. Thank you so much! I listed the postdocs as my recommenders on the application but is there a way to list somewhere that they are co-signed by the PI or would they just figure it out when they read the LOR?
  9. I've worked in two separate labs under postdocs so I asked both of them to write me a LOR with a signature from the PI's. I've already contacted the PI's and they agreed to sign the letters but should I just have asked them to write the letters instead of having the postdocs write them? It's just that I know the postdocs can write stronger letters than the PI's since I've worked with them closely whereas I see the PI once a week for lab meeting but that was pretty much the only contact I had with them. I don't want this to have a negative affect on my application I wouldn't be as worried if the majority of my recommendations were from professors but 2 of my letters are from postdocs and the last one is from a staff scientist at my current job.
