  1. Hello, I am applying to PhD programs in political science as well some public policy PhD programs in the Washington DC area. While I know that a CV would be ideal for PhD programs, I am not a traditional student. I have worked for a federal agency since undergrad and have gone to obtain two master's degrees (political science/international affairs). Most of my academic works have been in a classroom setting with one undergrad research conference. Does anyone have any advise on what to include in my resume? Thank you
  2. Hello Everyone, I plan to enter this cycle as a PhD applicant. I am finishing up my master's thesis this fall and will use the summer to develop my SOP and get my applications ready. My research interest are Civil-military relations and security issues in Latin America.
  3. Hello Everyone, I am asking this question for a friend because I am not sure what advice to give. My friend is currently attending a small state school. He graduated from that institution with a B.S. in computer technology with honors. He decided to go for an MA in computer science at the same school because there was a decent offering for funding. However it seems that his time there has really turned into a bad experiance. His professors have been giving him assigments taken from other universities in which they have not taught the materials in class and others make courses so difficult that it seems they want to see their grad students fail. Not even his advisor has time to meet with him given that he has canceled two appoinments when he has tried to reach out for help. This has taken a toll onmy friends gpa which was a 3.8 as an undergrad and has gone down to 3.0. Now with mitdterms over his prospects are not too good specially with professors who are not willing to help and a program who seems not to care about its students. Does anyone know if it is possible to transfer schools and how that is done? He no longer wants to stay at the same school. In addition he is worried that a dropping gpa will affect his chances to go to a better program. Anyone that has any advice would really help. Thanks!
  4. Hello Everyone, I know that eveyone on these boards is mainly concerned about academics but I was wondering if there are others out there who have a professional career and an academic career. I am currently in the second year of my MA in political science and have been a career student intern with an agency in the federal government for about 3 years. This program allows me to go to school fulltime and work fulltime. However, I find myself split between what to do. I really want to go for my PhD in political Science/ International relations and am preparing for the application cycle now but at the same time I am having a difficult time merging my academic interest with my career interest. Has anyone done a PhD program and worked fulltime? Also, my job allows me to attend training classes which give me the opportunity to earn professional certificates. I am currently working on a certificate for Program Management (while on summer break from school) How are these certificates looked upon by academia? Is anyone else in this situation?
  5. Hello Everyone, I am halfway through my master's degree and am starting to look at PhD Programs. I just wanted to get different opinions on Howard University's Political Science Phd program. I am looking for programs in the Washington D.C. area and Maryland. My major is International Relations with a minor in Comparative Politics. Any opinions or suggestions?
