  1. Oh, I love the shirt! Do you know if la Maison française offers open activities to non-residents? I'm interested in language exchange places (bar, café...) but I know nothing about this in Madison.
  2. I will be attending for a PhD in Spanish and Portuguese literature this fall About housing, I recommend everyone to check this thread, there are very interesting tips!:

Wow, thank you so much MangoSmoothie and Ruylopez88! Both of your replies have been very helpful to me! I'm very grateful to you both for your time MangoSomoothie, after spending all afternoon reading and reading the forum, I've found a few more pages (appart from craiglist) to widen my search. The one you advised me is awsome, so thanks for the tip! The problem I'm finding now is that everything is mostly taken (I'm very interested in the Willy st. neighborhood and it's surroundings, everyone in the forum advices that zone for grad students; I'll begin to look in some of the places you advised me, thanks again for this). Also, contacting with the tenants from abroad and without seeing the place before renting it's very risky. Again, I'll have to find a way of managing this Thanks a lot for your help!! Ruylopez88, thank you for your very detailed contribution to this thread! I found it really useful as I've never been to Madison. With your post I can make an idea of how the city is like. If I have any question about Madison I know I can ask you
  4. I'm working on Lat Am, but I'm begining to be interested in peninsular, so maybe I'll do a mix. Firstly I wanted to apply to comp lit, but I wanted to develope my research in my mother language (Spanish) (maybe I'll do comp lit as a minor and that would be more adecquate to my interests, I don't know yet ) Anyway, I applied to the Spanish and Portuguese department, not to the Lat Am one. Maybe the scholar they're getting in the Lat Am dept. is someone who applied directly there. Do you have more info? now I'm curious... Regarding your funding, I find it surprising that the university covered your expenses for only three years (considering that a PhD lasts 4 years minimum). The TAship UW-Madison offered you maybe will be as mine (36% appointment = 11k/9 months living stipend plus tuition remission and health insurance.) As they told me, the minimun a TA has to accomplish is a 33% (10k/9 months). If I can make it with that stipend, you will too Lots of luck, whatever you decide! PS: I realize this is a bit off topic but, what are your research interests? and, where are you from? I think you mentioned you'r also international...
  5. Hi everyone! I know this is an old thread and maybe no one's going to answer, but I've been accepted to UW-Madison and, just like litinworld I've got a $11k nine-month stipend before taxes (plus tuition remission and health insurance). I was thinking about renting a place on my own (not exceding 600$ per month). Do you think it's possible with my living stipend? i.am.me, maybe you can add something else? thanks a lot
  6. Hi Katla! I've got a TAship that covers the tuition, the living stipend and gives me eligibility to take health insurance provided by the university. My living stipend is $11k (9 months) aprox. I will be funded for four years. It's very low compared to what other universities are paying their TAs, but considering how UW is being mistreated I can consider myself very fortunate. I hope I can increase the amount by taking other jobs inside the campus (I'm international, so my visa doesn't allow me to do more). About housing: from what I see, with my stipend I can live well in Madison but without luxuries. Maybe I'm wrong, but Madison doesn't seem to be a very expensive city. Hope it helps you And, if you don't mind me asking, what funding did you receive? You'r going to the comp lit department, right?
  7. Hi everyone! I'm new in the GradCafe but I wanted to share that, a few weeks ago, I got admited to the Spanish literature PhD in UW-Madison! Anyone else coming to the Midwest on Fall 2015?

What a relief! But I guess I'll have to find a way of managing it in the summer thanks a lot for your answer! Now I'm looking for housing to enter on august, maybe is too soon but I'll have to do it form Europe and I want to be sure I will have a place to stay when my classes begin. I'm looking in craiglist, but maybe someone in this thread has some piece of advice. Thanks again
  9. It's so sad what's happening with the UW... It reminds me of the university system from Spain: no money, no education. Now I've been accepted as a TA in the Spanish PhD program funded for 4 years and I don't know if I'm making the right decission by accepting the offer... I find the stipend very low compared to other universities, but I like the program. Maybe it's worth the risk. (Also, I'm thrilled to go to Madison, I hope to find it as wonderful as you describe it -not forgetting the Cummings reference, I must recall it when spring comes if I finally go to Madison- )
Good luck! Hey guys! Congratulations to all that have been accepted and good luck to the ones that are still waiting. I've been admited to the Spanish literature PhD at UW-Madison. Is someone else coming to the same university? I hope I've made the right choice, I have my doubts but it's somewhat comforting to see a lot of people expresing the same feeling here in the GradCafe. Buena suerte!
