  1. Thank you so much MastersHoping, I'm sorry this is super belated but it's been really helpful. This, and Victor Cha's assurances have me pretty much sold. I guess I'll be seeing you on campus in September! I haven't formally accepted yet, but I'm pretty sure I will. Hoping others here will also join me I went along to a SAIS offerholders event last week and told them I was undecided because of a full tuition offer from Georgetown. The SAIS alumni just sighed and nodded and told me to go Hoya... haha.
  2. Thank you! I have a ready handful of questions. 1. How much can you branch out to other disciplines and take electives in non-Asian Studies subjects? The curriculum description says that 'Additional coursework can be used to fulfill a second concentration, apply towards one of Georgetown's graduate certificate programs or serve as available credits for electives.' What sort of classes could I take then? Other SFS classes? Any outside of SFS? I ask because I would like to gain a well-rounded IR education on top of focusing on East Asia specifically. 2. I understand the class of students is pretty small. What do you make of that? How do you find you fit in with the rest of SFS? How is campus life in general? 3. What are your favourite and least favourite things about the program? If anything, what do you regret the most? I really appreciate you doing this. I'm keen about attending, but I'm stuck on the other side of the world right now, never been to DC, let alone visit Georgetown. Your insights would really help!
  3. Thanks for the input, and congratulations to all of you with offers iowahoya, you and I have pretty much applied to the same places- the only difference is that I applied to GWU's International Affairs program instead of Yale. I personally think it's very unlikely I'm going to get anything that matches or betters the offer I've been given from Georgetown, so definitely giving it a lot of thought... Do you know whether the program takes any TA/RAs? The MASIA page is really quite lacking in info compared to some other programs... yytk, the stipend I think is something limited to the summer holidays, and my guess is that it's offered to all students regardless of tuition waivers. I agree that living in DC will be expensive, and yes, once the money is spent on tuition it's like you're back to zero. Most of the scholarship cases I've seen though for DC schools have been $20,000 or less, so I'm sort of pleasantly taken aback.
  4. Hey, I'm new to this thread and generally new to gradcafe, so please let me know if I'm not doing anything wrong. Firstly, hello to all and it's nice to meet people in this field! Best of luck to all of us. I just got an offer from Georgetown SFS for Asian Studies MA. I haven't heard back from my other three institutions yet (but those are for more general IR programs) and as an international student with no real sense of how financial aid works in the US, I find myself not sure on how to interpret the package that I've been given. I've been offered $40,000+ (tuition fees, essentially) and a stipend for internships or language study fellowships. My impression from the relatively little I know about American graduate schools, and a DC one at that, is that this is not a bad offer, but can people please tell me more or put this in context? I would also love to hear from anyone who's been accepted by SFS, if there are any of you out there on this forum
  5. Hello everyone. This is my first time here, so I apologise if I'm asking something that's obvious to a more savvy applicant, or has been answered before. I did do a search, but maybe I'm not doing it right! I'm in the middle of Fall 2015 MA applications now (last minute, I know) to US graduate schools, and I'm really rather confused about the dynamics of the Financial Aid Forms that one has to fill in, both for scholarship and also for providing information in general about plans to fund one's education. If I'm to be frank, I only graduated in June 2014, and I don't have the resources to be able to go on to further study if I don't get significant sums for financial aid. My intention, if things don't work out, is to apply again sometime later, or to scrap the plans completely- or at least until I have some savings to be able to go. If I may say so myself, I feel I'm a fairly strong candidate with above average GRE scores for the institutions I'm applying to (JHU SAIS, Georgetown, Tufts Fletcher, Columbia SIPA) and a high academic profile, so I feel that it'll be worth a shot at least. If not, at least I've gained some experience. But the funds that I can scrape together at the moment is barely above half of what the above schools reckon will cost per year just for tuition. If I'm offered substantial scholarship, then my family may be more inclined to support me, and I may be able to stretch myself further with regards to private loans. But at the end of the day, unless this happens, I absolutely cannot afford to go. How do I compose these forms then? Should I write them with an (realistic, but nevertheless) overestimate, based on what I may be able to wrangle if I'm offered a scholarship, or should I be more sober about my situation now and be more conservative about my estimates? Is there a Goldilocks zone for this stuff? How will graduate schools view candidates who, without pretty generous amounts of aid, will simply be too poor to attend? Oh, and perhaps I should add I'm an international student (UK). Will this affect my chances much? I know the scholarships at the above institutions are open to both US and international students, but is there a difference? Thanks
