  1. My wife and I are heading to Madison from NYC this summer! We are so excited. I am doing a joint PhD with History and Education. Good luck to all. I am visiting in a week to get a sense of the town. Any recommendations on neighborhoods or apartment finding?
  2. Woke up to an email with an acceptance off of the wait list at Wisconsin for History. So excited! The wait is finally over for me now.
  3. Well guys, we are 1 month away from decision day! Where are people at right now? Anyone still waiting to hear from programs? What are you next steps in the next 4 weeks? I am waiting on my two wait list programs and going forward with campus visits to my other admitted schools. The hardest part is figuring out travel arrangements for my Spring Break in April. Wisconsin is still my top-choice, but if it does not come through, I think it will be a tough decision between Oregon and Binghamton. Good luck to all in this final stretch. Congrats to those who have made decisions and are in the preparing stage!
  4. In my MA historiography class the professor asked us to introduce ourselves and describe our research focus. In order to not look like a fool by saying, "I want to learn about American History", I made up something about educational history since that was connected to my career background. 2 years later, that was the best self-fulfilling lie I ever told!
  5. Hi! I don't have an answer, but I had to write a similar email recently. I wanted to check back in with a wait list program in order to be able to plan travel at the beginning of April. I let them know that I understood they probably did not have any new information, but since they were my top choice and I would accept their offer, I wanted to check in before booking any tickets to visit other programs. I was not really looking for an answer at all but just wanted to get a sense of their vibe toward my position on the wait list. I figured if my email got ignored or their reply was short with no room for hope, my chances were getting slimmer. Fortunately, I received a quick response with glimmers of hope subtly woven in. I know they cannot make any kind of official reply or offer, but I am waiting another week or so to buy my plane tickets. I don't know if this helps. Unfortunately, their position and our position is completely dependent on how fast the first round candidates will notify them. I think the best you can do is see if they offer any kind of hope for getting off the wait list. Even then, it is a gamble to wait past your international school's deadline. Good luck!
  6. Welcome to New York, Chiqui! Let me know if you have any questions about moving to the city. I am not a native New Yorker, but I am afraid NYC has spoiled me. It's like no place on earth.
  7. I just heard back today with a rejection from CUNY Urban Ed. If you have not heard yet, maybe it is an admission! Good luck!
  8. I received an admission offer from the University of Oregon yesterday. Not sure if all notifications went out already though.
  9. jpb, My research also focuses on the intersection between religion, immigration, and education (and imperialism, cultural and otherwise). My approach this cycle was to concentrate on POI's and schools who primarily did educational history research. But at each of those schools as well as others, I looked for professors in the other categories, including foreign policy. You might have done this, but maybe next cycle you should look for programs who have professors that focus on immigration and education as well. In terms of educational history, UW-Madison, SUNY Binghamton, UPenn, and Georgia are schools to look at. Hope this is helpful!
  10. I live in the best neighborhood in New York - Inwood, Manhattan. I am biased, but it is great. I am happy to answer anyone's questions who are planning moves to NYC!
  11. I am also interested in the flying cats out question. My wife and I are leaving NYC with two cats. If we land in Madison, we will just suck it up and take the felines (who do not get along) in our car. But we don't want to waste a cross country experience if we end up on the west coast. Does anyone have any experience or thoughts?
  12. Hi All! I am also a long time forum stalker ready to chime in! I am kind of a hybrid PhD applicant. My research focus is the history of U.S. education from 1870s-1920s-ish. Particularly interested in the U.S. occupation and school system-building in the Philippines and how it connects to other education and reform movements of the time period. I applied to some history programs and some education departments. I wanted to chime in to claim one of the other Binghamton admits, Heimat! I am excited about the decisions coming up in the next few weeks. Good luck to all and thanks for developing a great community that took the edge off of the anxiety!
  13. Congrats! That is so awesome! I am currently living in NYC so send me a message if you need any living or visiting advice.
  14. I got waitlisted for SHIPS history. Feels a little like purgatory. Congrats to those accepted and condolences to those rejected. I will be joining one of those ranks soon!
  15. I just received an official notification from UW-Madison that I was admitted to their Educational Policy Studies program. I am very excited but am unsure about funding. The department could not offer me any financial aid but stated that most students get assistance-ships in other departments. If anyone has information about this, it would be much appreciated!
