  1. I actually did my English MA at Auburn. It is a great program with some awesome faculty. What field are you most interested in? In terms of housing, there are a lot of options. If you're planning on being within walking distance to campus, expect to pay around 750 or so per month. Just a bit farther north of campus (on a bus line) is Habitat apartments where you'll get much more space for less than 700 a month. If you have any specific concerns or needs regarding housing, I'm sure I can get information from someone for you. My last note on housing is AVOID Logan Square Apartments. The management is disrespectful, and the maintenance staff often refuses to do their job. Cost of living is fairly low -- about what you'd expect from a large town/small city setting. Plenty of shopping areas in both Auburn and Opelika. A lot of great bars and restaurants. Again, if you have specific questions, feel free to ask.
  2. Getting my Purdue acceptance: Wondering where my final few decisions are: Getting an email from POI at Purdue, in which my WS is praised for the brilliance it is: My response when asked if I would go through the application/waiting process again: (I would apologize for the RPDR-ness of this, but in terms of gifs, it's really all I got. )
  3. Your positive outlook toward potential opportunities in your future is amazing. I was shut out of the 10 programs I applied to last year and when my first two decisions were both rejections, I was scrambling to come up with any kind of "Plan B" I could think of. The fact that you had one to begin with just goes to show how on top of things you are. Regardless of how the rest of this application season goes, you do you. PhD or not, I'm sure you'll be doing great things in the future.
  4. Wow! So much good news! Congratulations to all of the new admits! Side note: I'm glad I ignored the "avoid GC" warnings I got from people. Y'all are pretty freaking fantastic.
  5. Hey, all. Been too excited to get on here and actually post, but got my first acceptance! Purdue wants me! Still waiting on a bunch of other places to make decisions, but still, things are working out! Congrats to all other recent admits. This has been an exciting few days on here.
  6. Undergrad: "The Renaissance Mind: Florence 1300-1600" -- This class was the first time I really engaged in interdisciplinary research, which kind of opened up my dramatic leap into academia. It was also the first class I took in which my professor took an interest in my work and suggested that I pursue an academic career. Grad School is more of a toss-up: "Early Modern Literature and Material Culture" -- Again, this was a turning point for me, as it was my first seminar I took in my interest area. The class was great, but what I valued more was how supportive the professor was/is of my work. It also didn't hurt that about 80% of the texts we read were dramatic texts, but I might be biased in that respect "Race, Gender, and Sexuality in 18th Century Literature" -- I will admit to kind of disliking the 18th century, mostly because I lack the ability to properly enjoy the novel form. However, I learned so much theory in this course and the professor, though initially intimidating because she's been producing new scholarship steadily for the past 35+ years, has been incredibly supportive of me and my work, even when I am feeling stupid and utterly useless.
  7. The RPDR-themed post slayed, darling: Everybody deserves a little drag in life:
  8. When my phone alerts me of a new email: When said email is a fake-out (reminder of deadline, receipt of transcript, etc.): When I re-read my writing sample/SOP: "It can't be that hard to get in somewhere, can it?" When non-academics tell me to relax and smile:
