  1. esotericish makes a good point about the metro cost -- the farther you go, the more you pay. If you travel during peak hours (before 9:30 a.m. or 3-7 p.m.), the price is higher. If you're working and going to school, see if your employer does SmartBenefits, which could pay for your commute. Either way, get a Smarttrip card or you'll have to pay an extra $1 per trip. From Columbia Heights to College Park, you'd be paying $3.45 each way ($2.70 off-peak). If you do want to live in Columbia Heights, consider group houses. A lot of young people share larger houses and end up paying very little (by DC standards anyway) in rent. That also means shared internet, which saves a bit of money, too. You can find these on the rooms & shares section of craigslist. Silver Spring actually does have a walkable downtown area, but it isn't super-convenient to College Park because it's on the red line -- so you'd have to take the red line in to Fort Totten and then out to College Park. It's not super out-of-the-way, but not quite as convenient (especially if something happens on the red line, and something always seems to be happening on the red line). Another thing to look into is the UMD shuttle. I think it's pretty extensive, so even if you didn't live walkable to campus you may be able to get there pretty easily. I think it also goes to parts of Silver Spring, so that'd be one way to avoid the metro costs and time changing trains.
  2. Take a look at the metro map -- the red line is a U, with Silver Spring very close to one end and Tenleytown (where you get the AU shuttle) close to the other end. That means the route you would have to take on the metro is super indirect - all the way south to come right back up again. If you want a more direct commute, look for something on the same end of the metro as Tenleytown. Bethesda would be the more convenient nearby Maryland suburb.
  3. According to this guide, EUR 34 is actually a kids size in the US: http://www.zappos.com/c/shoe-size-conversion If you really are a kids 3 (!), you can save a lot of money buying kids size shoes. For athletic-type shoes, though, definitely take a look at the kids department. They're substantially cheaper and sometimes you can even find them without glitter and Disney characters. For what it's worth, I'm a 5 or 5 1/2 and definitely have some trouble finding nicer shoes in my size in stores. Sometimes I get lucky (and you figure out the stores around you that tend to carry smaller sizes), but I often buy online.
  4. It may be too late for the OP here, but there are definitely good options from Dulles to GW. You can take a shuttle from Dulles to the last stop on the silver line. It runs regularly, is totally reliable, takes only about 10-15 minutes to the metro, and costs $5. Then you can take the silver line all the way into Foggy Bottom (about 30-40 minutes on the metro -- first stop in DC). Shuttle: http://www.washfly.com/flyer_bus_schedule.htm Metro: www.wmata.com
  5. My favorite is from last year: University Of Virginia Electrical And Computer Engineering, PhD (F14) Rejected via Website on 7 Apr 2014 I 8 Apr 2014 Pahahahaha! Of all fishes in the ocean, a wrecked school like UVa had the guts to reject me? These guys are a joke with no punch line. I've been admitted to far better programs. Charlottesville, Viginia can suck it!!! On the flip side, my horoscope warned me about applying to this school. I should have listened!
  6. Ha! I got the same thing and had the same reaction. Good luck with your decisions! It sounds like you already have a couple of good options anyway.
  7. Four rejections on Feb. 28! But no acceptances posted. It seems strange to hand out a bunch of rejections but no acceptances. I wonder if acceptances did go out, but weren't gradcafe users -- and we're both sitting on the waitlist.
  8. I never got a LinkedIn viewer from UW, but that sounds like a good sign for ENMC! A handful of rejections were posted on the results board, but no acceptances -- has anyone heard good news from Evans?
  9. Yeah, looking at the past results boards, it seems like most programs notify in March, so maybe we'll get more of a conversation going once decisions start coming in. UT-Austin (LBJ) had some admits in late January in past years -- I wonder if they're on a similar timeline for this year. Any other LBJ PhD applicants lurking on this thread?
  10. Anyone want to revive this conversation for fall 2015 public policy Ph.D. applications? I can start. I applied to LBJ, Evans, and Ford. Anyone else? Has anyone heard anything yet?
