  1. Hi falcore, I'm kind of in the same position as you are. I ended up applying to a mix of MAs and PhDs (UCLA, NYU, USC, Emory, Texas, a few others) but so far haven't gotten any good news back. I did find out (too late, unfortunately) that the University of Toronto offers a one-year program that provides tuition remittance and a $15k stipend. I haven't looked too hard into yet (not ready to get back into the work...), but I think other Canadian universities may have similar opportunities, so that may be what I will focus on the next round. Edit: I forgot to mention... I have dual Canadian-American citizenship... so options for international students at Canadian schools may be different. But still worth looking into!
  2. Thank you. I appreciate the reassurance. By "good enough," I didn't mean so much the quality of my SOP itself, but rather the "fit." There really aren't any professors in Film departments that offer a standalone MA whose work really matches my interests. And as someone who was on a completely different track in undergrad, I don't feel ready by any means to go for the PhD, even though that is the ultimate goal. There are, however, many in Asian/Asian-American Studies or Ethnic Studies who study what I'm interested in, but that's not really where I want to be.
  3. Hi everyone, I'm wondering how specific I should get for a SOP for a MA that does not have a thesis option in its curriculum. Writing about my research interests/past experience is a little hard for me to begin with, because I was a pre-med English student (focusing on creative writing also... not literary studies) with an Art History minor. I'm now applying for Media Studies. I have studied quite a bit of film theory this past year independently after graduation to buff up my background and my writing sample. I do have some fairly interesting (I hope!) potential research topics that I'm talking about for my MA programs that require a thesis: code-switching in East Asian and Southeast Asian film. (Most of these programs I am applying don't have a person doing work specifically on Asian film but rather someone doing work on language/identity in film or world cinema more generally... which, I feel like for a MA is "good enough"...?) But how much should I say for the programs without a thesis option? Surely, I can address my interests for term papers and things like that, but I don't want to come off like I don't understand how this program works. Also, should I avoid naming professors I'm interested in working with? I contacted 2 people at one particular program and got no responses (this was for a program that does require a thesis), so I'm giving up on reaching out. Also don't want to seem overzealous as only a MA applicant. Thanks for all your help!
  4. Hi everyone, I'm applying to MA programs (also considered PhDs, but I've sat on this for so long now that I think it's a little late this cycle to really commit to it) in Film/Visual/Media Studies. I'm considering programs in the US, Canada, and Europe. I am basically hoping for the best in terms of funding (which is why I'm open to European programs), so any advice on that would be great. I graduated in 2014 and have been living at home for the past year working a service (but living wage) job, so I have been able to save quite a bit of money and as long as I get a decent % of tuition remission, I think I can make it work. I have a 3.5 from undergrad from a top 25 university with a major in English and a minor concentration in Art History. GRE scores are 165/165/4.5. I'm a little concerned about my writing score and the fact that my undergraduate studies do not quite align with what I want to focus on in graduate school, especially considering that my English program was not theory-heavy. I focused mostly on Creative Writing (creative non-fiction and documentary writing). However, because I only have a minor in Art History, I only had to take one survey course and actually focused primarily on film and cultural studies, so I hope I'm not too far off. On the other hand, I was actually pre-med during undergrad, so my thesis was creative non-fiction but had more to do with public health than anything I'm interested in now. I do have a pretty good paper from a Feminist Art course that I plan on using as a writing sample. This is also part of why I want to pursue an MA before a PhD. What I want to study: video art (mostly 80s and 2000s), shifts in viewing practices/spectatorship in new media, feminist film and art, code-switching in literature and film, East Asian and Southeast Asian (particularly Korean and Thai) cinema--My interests are fairly cohesive in my mind, but I can tell I may have a hard time clarifying everything in my SOP. Any recommendations for programs? I'm also open to Art History programs and English/Comp Li programs with concentrations in Media/Film/etc. I am at the intermediate level in German and French and have reading knowledge of Korean and Japanese. However, my skills are probably not enough to do a full program in German or French without some kind of intensive study first. I appreciate any help on this! Thank you!
  5. Where are you placed? Should we all make a Facebook group for 2015 - 2016 USTAs?
  6. Scroll down to the bottom for current participants: https://www.usta-austria.at/site/resources/participants?SWS=9ptr8ieo6pturbbvurivb20bd5
  7. So, Germany ETA tends to know relatively early right? Good luck, everyone!
  8. Noticed that these statistics were apparently last updated in February 2014... http://us.fulbrightonline.org/eta-grant-application-statistics Does this mean we'll get to see the number of applicants and projected number of placements for 2015 - 2016 soon?
  9. Hi bluestraveler, There was a little note specifying for Germany ETA students to put their preferences where it said "Proposed host country affiliation" or something like that, but it was optional. I think generally speaking, we get notified in mid/late March, and then the notification come in a spottier fashion. I think we all get them sometime during the months of April/May.
  10. Good luck with both! Would you mind telling me what you put down as your preferences? And do you have any idea how likely it is to get one of your choices? I put down Berlin (I know it's unlikely, but I figured it wouldn't hurt), Hessen, and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (I had no good reason for this except that pictures I've seen of the area are beautiful). I was thinking that if I put down Brandenburg and ended up teaching in a school in Potsdam, I could still live in Berlin... but someone told me most of Brandenburg is really, really conservative. I'm also thinking about how the total number of people selected at some point exceeds the total number of placements? If you add together the 140 who are initially selected and then the alternates who are eventually accepted... I really should stop driving myself crazy by thinking about all this... Edit: just remember one more thing I wanted to mention. I heard that rather than the proposed budget cut, Fulbright actually received an extra $1.8 million in funding. Does anyone know if this means there may be more grants available than usual, or what?
  11. Hi everyone! Excited that I've been recommended for the Germany ETA, though if it is true that there are twice as many recommended as there are eventually selected, then I guess something like 70% of total applicants for the Germany ETA were recommended, since the overall acceptance rate is like 35%... so, not feeling *that* special, but still excited. Also, is anyone else applying for a USTA for teaching English in Austria? I can't find ANY information in terms of acceptance rate, etc. online about this. They both have about the same number of placements (140) but it seems to be way less people apply to Austria...
