  1. Thank you very much for your thorough juilletmercredi. I appreciate it. Do you know any online resources (or maybe there has been an older post here) on finding a cheap way to do things? Meaning: If you live in Harlem for example, do not shop from store A, prefer store B because it has better value for money stuff. Another example might be: Don't use a major cell company in NY because while in the city the coverage and support of the X smaller provider is exactly the same. Stuff like that. Or maybe I should learn the hard way Thanks.
  2. Hi guys, thanks for all the info, although I must admit that I didn't read all of the 30 pages. I am coming to NY in August on CUNY's GC Fellowship, which is 25k per year. First of all I would like to ask what is the tax situation for this amount. Secondly, although I have done some research on affordable neighborhoods were I can share a place for ~$1000/month, I would like to ask if the remaining ~$1000/month are enough. I must take into consideration the metro pass (120), mobile(60), groceries(300?), any other suggestions that are standard for the monthly budget? Lastly, keeping in mind that the big chunk of the stipend is deposited around November, what amount of money do you think I should have with me when arriving in NY? Taking into account that I can stay at a friend for some time. Thank you
  3. Although I have no news (so probably I am not even waitlisted), I have applied to UCSB (crypto) so I'll say that UIUC is soooooooo much better for you
  4. I wasn't aware of that possibility, thank you for your insight.
  5. I don't doubt you, it is just that in UW he will be in a PhD program. As he seems really unsure about what to choose, maybe it is better that he starts from a MSc program (smoother transition) and then proceed. Maybe when he graduates, he'll find a great job and reconsider about a PhD (that's what I meant with career opportunities). If not, he can always apply to UW. You think that they will hold a grudge against him?
  6. My two cents: Taking money out of the picture: Go to Princeton for a funded MSc (flexibility, smoother transition, career opportunities maybe) and then decide if you want to continue for a PhD. I believe that there is a good chance they'll accept you at UW (I mean, you'll be even better by then).
  7. Hey all and good luck with your applications. Does anybody here know about the questions during an interview from cryptography groups? Are they technical and specific on the professor's work? Or more general about basic things (eg What is RSA? How we define addition on an elliptic curve? etc)? Or just a friendly chat about what you already know? Thanks in advance.
