  1. That's very nice of you!
  2. I'd love to hear the answer once you do get it sorted out!
  3. Does anyone know for sure whether you can accept both an NSF and a Ford predoc fellowship? (I'm a Ford alternate, so I'm desperately hoping the answer is 'no' now that NSF decisions have come out...)
  4. Hi Sprite, I'll be heading to GPPI this fall too!
  5. I have to agree with the advice given by other posters about the value of working before grad school. After working several years after undergrad I now have a better sense of what I want to do, and I'm much more excited about going back to grad school (than I would have been straight out of undergrad). As someone who's trying to decide between Duke and Georgetown for the fall, though, can I ask why you'd choose to go to GPPI if you start in the fall (especially given that Duke offered you money)?
  6. Stiles, you mentioned before that you accepted Ford for the April 15th deadline last year and then later changed over to Sanford. How was that even possible?? Did Duke have a later notification deadline last year?
  7. Well, to be fair, I believe he said they cover the same ground in 3(?) quarters at Harris -- but I don't really know how the quarter system works so I was taking a guess. Basically, the point he was making is that he thought the only program that's as quantitatively rigorous at GPPI is Harris, but he said they rush through the material at Harris and pack it into a shorter amount of time. (You're probably better equipped than me to say specifically what that amount of time would be.)
  8. I spoke with one of the GPPI professors last week and he said that the only school that covers as much quantitative ground as Georgetown (accordig to him) is the Harris School, but they cram it into one year at Harris, rather than 3 semesters.
  9. Can anyone enlighten me about how exactly this asking/negotiating for additional aid process works? Who exactly would I need to talk to? I haven't seen or heard anything from Sanford about how to go about this or a deadline for doing so (as stilesg57 refers to). Or is the possibility of negotiating off the table this year, given the economy? I really hadn't planned on asking about getting more money because I was quite happy with the funding package I originally got from Duke. However, GPPI recently made me a significantly better offer, which really complicates things because (after visiting both schools) I'm more excited about Duke's program but it's hard to walk away from Georgetown's offer...
  10. Just in case you didn't know, SPPD has another visit day on April 9th (unless you already have another school scheduled for that day) -- assuming that you're talking about missing the Dean's Merit day tomorrow.
  11. Just saw that an acceptance for Harris was posted (with "a full fellowship + $10K") in the results section. Is this real? Anyone else heard anything? If the admitted poster happens to be reading this, what time did you get the email and would you mind sharing your stats?
  12. I tried calling the admissions office a couple of times today to get an update -- just got voicemail both times. Hopefully that means they're busy finalizing emails to be sent out today. If it's any help to anyone, it looks like April 9-10 and April 12 will be the visitation days this year: http://harrisschool.uchicago.edu/students/new-students/pdf/OntheMappFlyer2010.pdf
  13. Putoots, It's helpful to hear your thoughts about American's reputation on the West Coast. As an East Coaster, I've always known the school's name and have always thought of it as a pretty strong school for those interested in going into government work. Georgetown obviously has a certain cache, but I think most people on the East Coast have at least heard of American (and may or may not know a little something about it). As for my scholarship offer, I got 18 credit hours and a $9,000 assistantship, renewable for a second year. Even though American may not be very well known on the West Coast, compared to the debt I'd have to take on to attend Georgetown (even with a scholarship offer from them), American's sounding pretty good...
  14. I just got an email from American with my scholarship/assistantship offer for the MPP program at about 1pm. So it looks like they've started sending the emails. I'm at the beginning of the alphabet, though, so my guess is I got my email way earlier than most people will.
  15. I got my acceptance and Dean's Merit scholarship offer in the mail yesterday, at which point I realized that USC's Dean's Merit visitation day is the same as Duke's. Anyone else in the same predicament? At least there's some travel reimbursement for USC, but I also really like Duke's program and am hesitant to miss my chance to meet other prospective students... Any thoughts?
