  1. I have applied to 3 PhD programs for Fall 2015 and have been accepted by 2. One of these acceptances is in a Social Psyc department and the other is in a Political Science department. I am having a tough time deciding as its hard to directly compare departments and rankings across fields and I don't know if the job prospects are better in poli science or social psyc. Any help/advice is appreciated. School A is arguably the top political psychology program in the country and is in a political science dept. I share research interests with almost all the faculty and have had positive communications with a POI about working with him. However, the area is not that great to live in (expensive, not really a college town and I will need a car to get around - which I wont have). Further I am a social psychologist by training (BA and MSc in psyc) and have not taken many poli science papers and am not well versed in american politics or public policy (1 of which I will have to minor in). I feel like I would be behind in terms of socialization in the field if I go here as most incoming students have undergrad degrees in political science. Going to this school I would be moving into new areas of interest which I am excited about but means I have a litle bit of catching up to do. This is a really great program though and it has excellent placement rates and a median finishing time of 4.5 years. They tell me I could get a job in a poli science or psyc department but looking at placement history, students have all gone into political science. School B Is ranked around the 50s in social psychology. My POI would be an up and coming superstar and I would be her first student. We have communicated a lot and have already started working together as my previous research is almost an exact match with hers (we are already working on a paper together where I will be first author). Going to this school I would most likely be ahead of my classmates and able to jump into research and publishing straight away and I am already well socialized in this field with great connections. However, the program ranking is not the greatest and there is only 2 faculty that really interest me. Also, the methods training is good by not as good as School A. Students generally take 6 years to complete this program and placement varies across faculty but the facutly member who would be my second advisor is well known, has published in top journals recently and has placed her students in great post-docs and TT jobs. The POI here is a great fit for my previous research but I'm not sure I want to keep doing that specific research for a PhD thesis, although she is open to lots of ideas and has some exciting lines of research planned. Does anyone have any tips to help me choose? I feel like I am not just choosing a school but am choosing a field of study that will affect the rest of my career :/
