  1. Hello All- I'm currently a student in the 2 year program, and I started last fall. I'm also curious about others' financial aid packages too because my income is significantly less this year but they still offered me the same package as last year, which was only $9000 of scholarship. I was surprised ( and a little annoyed) that people were saying their initial award was for $14, 00. I'm definitely going to appeal for more. YogaGal, I agree with JillChritine's advice about your application. Don't get hung up on your gpa. At this point, it is what it is. Part of what they're also looking for in your essay is if you're capable of graduate level writing at the level they expect. Make sure your essay is well written and proofread it.
  2. Hi! I'm currently in the online program. I started in Fall 2016. The online option has been pretty rigorous and I've heard that we have more work than the residential students, but I'm not sure how true that is. There's alot of reading, probably 200+ pages a week between all 4 courses. Full participation is expected and take the form of using the chat box during class meetings, or coming on camera and mic to share your ideas. There's ALOT of group work. I think I've had a group project in every class and the assignment has counted for a significant part of the grade. This is the first year of the online program so they're still working out some kinks. I'm giving serious consideration to changing to the residential program, mostly because I'm interested now in the Advanced Generalist field of practice and that's not offered online. Let me know if you have questions about something and I'll see if I can help.
  3. I'm taking online classes right now; just started in early May. I'm not sure about the theory about ad pop ups because I've gotten the same pop ups from schools I know are reputable. I think it might be common practice for some colleges now, especially those who might have an online program that's new. Anyway....I'm having a good experience so far. It's kind of awkward at first using the online classroom but you adjust. I tell people it's like the opening to the Brady Bunch where everyone is in a box on the screen. We can all see and here each other. So in thAt respect its like being in person. We still meet at a scheduled time and you're expected to participate in discussions. A lot of the work is independent though. You do readings and watch videos prior to the class meeting and come to class prepared to discuss. You also might have to do activities with the videos and readings. For example , this week we have to visit a welfare office and get an application for a program similar to food stamps. We're supposed to observe the office, pros, process to apply and we'll share our findings in class. Sometimes you might just do a writing reflection. Class is on 1.5 hours so you can't cover all the material, so you're doing a lot on your own. You have to manage time well and be a self guided learner. Let me know if you have specific questions I can try to answer. My stats: undergrad in English 3.1, grad in education 3.7, don't recall my get, but they don't ask for it
  4. I have a Masters already in Eduation, with a 3.7 gpa. My undergrad is in English, with barely a 3.1 gpa. I don't remember what my gre scores were but they don't ask for them. My undergrad was kind of mainly because I have credits from 3 different schools and there's classes I withdrew from or repeated. think it helped that I have a Masters already, because they're looking for people who they think will be successful with graduate level work, and Will complete the program. There seems to be a big focus on being able to write well and complete research papers. I'd suggest investing time in your personal statement if you have concerns about your other credentials. This will be a way to show your writing skills and explain your level of dedication to the program and the field if social work. I had good letters of recommendation, that weren't from "power people" like supervisors or professors. They were from workplace colleagues, since I've been out if school for about 6 years. I got into Columbia and Fordham since my last posting. I saw somewhere that Columbia accepts 75%-80% of applicants. One year around 1300 applied and 800-something we're accepted. I've read on other boards that it's not too challenging to get into programs.
  5. I can't gauge how mine went. The interviewers seemed pretty indifferent but maybe it was because they'd just been doing several interviews back to back. It's prohibiting after a while. I felt ok about my answers, but I asked a question I thought was dumb. All we can do now is wait......I applied to Fordham too and got an email this week that my application was just being sent for review. I was so annoyed because I had my application in over a month and thought I'd be getting a decision soon, not just beginning the process.
  6. Never mind...it's not what I thought it was, but still useful info.
  7. CupofJoe, I hope you check the board before you interview......I just came across this link about how to prepare for your interview. Http://columbia.uloop.com/news/view.php/123283/How-to-Prepare-for-Your-Skype-Interview I applied for the online program too; clinical track
  8. I just got an email for an I interview too! I was wondering the same things as you. I've heard that they just want to get a sense of what you're like. They want to see if the impression they got from your application matches what they're looking for; things like maturity, being articulate, interpersonal skills, etc. I'm scheduled for Thursday. Good luck!!
  9. I got accepted on April 3rd too. I also applied to online programs at Rutgers, Fordham, Columbia, Simmons and Case Western. I was accepted at Rutgers and Simmons but haven't heard from Columbia or Fordham. I dc extended the time I was supposed to have to sign the commitment letter. I was having a hard time deciding what to do, but I'm enrolling at Usc. All I was offered so far is loans. I might end up transferring if I can't find additional "free" aid in the future.
  10. I'm starting with the Summer 2015 online cohort. I got my award letter last week. All they offered was loans. They said scholarships would be awarded the first week of class
  11. Hello! Your posts have been helpful and encouraging. Thanks for sharing your knowledge! I'm an older student who's applying to MSW programs. This will be my second Masters, and I have been out of school 6 years. I'm no longer in contact with professors, so my LOR's are from professional colleagues. Will this be damaging to my application? And will a prior Masters carry any weight?
  12. I applied for the online program, but haven't heard back yet. My experience with admissions has been really pleasant so far. They've been accommodating and responsive. They had a webinar recently that was helpful in understanding more about the online program.
  13. I applied, but haven't heard anything yet. Supposedly there are scholarships and grants to offset the cost. I was also hoping that since it was a new program they'd offer nice packages as an incentive to attend. I have the impression they're recruiting applicants, so they can have more guinea pigs.
  14. I applied too. If accepted I'm hoping for an amazing Financial Aid package. There's no way students can afford to go there otherwise.
  15. I've applied to several online programs (Columbia, Fordham, Rutgers, USC, Simmons) The requirements for admission and degree requirements are the same whether you go online or on campus. Don't have the expectation that it'll be easier to get in or easier to complete. Make sure whatever program you apply to is accredited by CSWE, some programs aren't .
