  1. I am 30 and am beginning my PhD. I am coming straight from undergrad so being older than my classmates is nothing new to me. I had no trouble "fitting in" in the undergrad environment. I'm not exactly a "social butterfly" but I hope my social experience in grad school is similar to undergrad. I'm not anxious though. In there to earn a PhD. :-)
  2. I was driving. I noticed a missed call and a voicemail. As I was merging into 60mph traffic I heard, "We want to extend to you an offer of admission." I was on my way back to campus and then just could not wait to get back to tell my adviser. I also received a late offer today, while walking through the zoo. I declined it as I'm already committed to the earlier offer.
  3. I would just reply letting her know that I was flattered she took the time to contact me personally. I would tell her that I will certainly consider her lab when looking at opportunities for rotations, but would neither make a commitment nor close a door. At the end of the day, this is YOUR education and YOUR career and you should view it thusly. Do not let yourself get pushed into a rotation you do not want, just so you can be the "nice guy."
  4. I think I might be the opposite. I received rejection after rejection and had just lost ALL motivation to finish. After all, what did it matter? It did not matter how hard I hard worked because nobody wanted me. FINALLY, I received an offer of admission from my TOP choice (to whom I almost did not apply, simply because it was too far away). So in short my answer is yes, I am CRAZY emotional. I was ON AIR when I finally got to tell my undergraduate advisor, not only that I HAD gotten in, but WHERE. Going straight from BS to PhD is TERRIFYING but I am also incredibly excited, but I have all the motivation in the world to finish my BS with the best grades possible, because I came incredibly close to not having a placement in the fall. I am INCREDIBLY excited (AND terrified) to be embarking on my PhD in the fall!
  5. Given my personal familial situation, this was of great concern to me. Ultimately, I accepted an offer at the only school that made me an offer, but honestly, a major factor of consideration for me was the feasibility of weekends off. I spoke with some students at the school I will be attending in the fall and they said that, though it does rely largely on your project, the PIs in general, do not seem to frown upon not being in the lab on weekends. It was important to me to be able to be free on weekends, either to go home or for my family to come to me. The consensus was that I am at the mercy of my project, so choose wisely. This is probably less of a concern for non-science people.
  6. Finish my BS is my top priority. Then I am just going to spend as much time as I can with my family until I have to relocate in July. No special plans, other than to find an apartment.
