  1. Has anyone heard from.... University of Virginia Clinical Psych PhD (NOT the Curry School) NYU Steinhardt Counseling Psych PhD Rutgers New Brunswick Clinical Psych PhD If yes, do you know if they are still in the process of sending out interview invites? Thanks in advance!!
  2. Thank you both for your advice! I assume this applies to the number of pages too, in addition to the number of words.
  3. Does anyone have any advice on how many words over it is acceptable to go on a personal statement? For example, one of the schools I'm applying to states that the personal statement should be an essay of "about 1000 words." I am currently at about 1300 words and can not get it any shorter for the life of me. Any thoughts?? Thanks!
  4. I am taking the Psychology Subject GRE at the end of October as well and am wondering if anyone knows when I will get my score? (I am taking a paper version of the test.) How long does it take for scores to be posted online on my account?
  5. I am just wondering if any one has any advice on whether I should take the psych subject GRE (I am a psych major). I have already taken the regular GRE and scored 154 quant, 155 verbal. The programs I am applying to do not require the psych GRE, so i'm wondering if its worth it to take it? If I score high, will it improve my application or counteract my less than thrilling regular GRE scores? I feel like I don't have a lot of time to prepare since I have a full course schedule this fall and am really busy (not to mention it's $150). If it's going to be a valuable aspect to my application, I will take it, but if not, should I not take it? Thanks!
  6. Hey again, So I just took ETS's practice GRE after studying very hard for 2 months. I only scored a 154 on verbal and 151 on quant. I take the actual GRE next Friday. I am freaking out because these are not at all the scores I wanted and really thought my studying would pay off. Is there any way I could still get into a clinical/counseling psych PhD program with these GRE scores and my stats from my original post above??
  7. I really would love for someone to critique my practice GRE essays. I would like to know around what score I would receive for my writing. If anyone can help me with this, please let me know!! For some reason I am unable to attach my writing to this post and I can't copy/paste my writing either. So please comment or private message me and we will figure it out! Thanks in advance!!
  8. Hi Monisha, I too am applying to Clinical Psych PhD programs for fall 2016 admission, so I can answer a few of your questions based on the research I've done/things I've read/heard. As for some of your other questions, you'd be much better off getting an answer from someone who has completed the process already and is a little more knowledgeable! I can imagine how scary it must be applying as an international applicant - kudos to you for your ambition!! 1. You are not too late, as long as you have been racking up experiences/things to put on your CV throughout your previous years of education. I myself have just started forming my list of schools I am thinking of applying to at the beginning of this summer. It seems that most applicants get the ball rolling the summer prior to applying, but it's never too early to start! I've even been jotting down ideas for my personal statement. I've also started thinking about who I'll be asking for letters of recommendation, researching different programs really in depth, and studying for the GRE. Which brings me to something you mentioned - my only advice for you with the GRE would be to take it earlier if you can. Though you get your scores (verbal and quant) the day you take the exam, your writing scores will not be ready for a few weeks, and don't forget that it can take a few weeks to send scores to your schools. As you said, many deadlines are December 1, so taking the GRE earlier is best (if that's manageable for you). This will also allow you to have time to retake the test if you are not satisfied with your first scores. 2. With solid research experience, good letters of recommendation and a good GPA/GRE scores, you have a shot. To my understanding, most programs have an acceptance rate somewhere between 2% - 15%. The schools with the very low acceptance rates are the very top programs, and also programs which receive a crazy amount of applicants. The highest acceptance rate I've seen for a clinical program is 15%. So, on average, you're looking at about an 8% acceptance rate for this type of program. 3. I can't answer this for you, but I would definitely apply to some PhD programs. You never know unless you try! 4. Throughout my search for schools, I've seen quite a few programs with research in gender issues, and a few dealing with criminal behavior. I'm blanking on the specific programs, but I've seen sort of a trend that NYC programs have quite a few faculty doing gender issue studies. Some programs in Philadelphia and Baltimore had some criminal behavior research as well. I'm from the east coast, so I'm not sure where exactly you're looking to apply. Good luck on your journey!! Take a deep breath and have some faith!! Please feel free to message me if you have any other questions or concerns, I hope this helped!
  9. I am applying to counseling and clinical PhD programs this coming fall and have been doing a lot of research trying to find good faculty matches (POI). However, I have noticed that my research interests are often with faculty who are not in the program I want to apply to. For example, I am planning to apply to SUNY Albany for a counseling psych PhD (since I think I have a better chance of being accepted into counseling over their clinical) but I prefer the research that the clinical profs are doing. For another example, I am planning to apply to the clinical psych PhD at Temple (because I want to be able to do therapy and academia in the future), but the developmental faculty's research is much more appealing to me. Any thoughts? Could I apply to lets say a counseling program but have a developmental or clinical POI?? Thanks!!
  10. I am applying for a PhD in psychology this coming fall and have a question regarding faculty match. Some schools I'm applying to have both clinical and counseling psychology PhD programs with different faculty for each (one of these schools for example, is SUNY Albany). I really do think a counseling psychology PhD might be more up my alley than clinical, but I like the clinical faculty's research better than the counseling faculty. Does anyone know if it's possible to apply to the counseling psych program but in my statement of purpose apply to/choose a clinical POI? Thanks!
  11. Thank you both for your prompt responses! I'm looking into programs mostly on the east coast ranging as north as Boston to as south as D.C. I know these are some of the toughest to get into, and the GRE scores are very high. I've heard of Magoosh, I'll definitely look into using that! Thanks!
  12. I'm currently an psychology major (starting my senior year this coming fall 2015) at a respected public state school in New Jersey. I am planning to apply to Counseling and Clinical Psychology PhD programs on the east coast this coming fall and would like to know my chances! I'm interested in youth development, after-school programs, parent-child relationships/family, and positive psychology. Here are some of my stats: -Associate's in Liberal Arts from community college: cumulative GPA 3.85, Psychology GPA 4.0. -Bachelor's Degree Current GPA: 3.83 -Haven't taken GRE yet - this is my biggest concern, as I do not do well on standardized tests. I took a cold practice test and scored 148 on quant, 152 on verbal. -This summer I'm working in a research lab at my college focusing on memory and aging. -I have worked in another lab for 2 semesters doing research on emerging adulthood, engagement, adjustment, and community health working with minority youth. Currently waiting to hear whether I've been awarded a student-faculty research award I applied for a few weeks ago. My mentor and I are hoping to submit work for publication next fall and present at a conference (hopefully before apps are due!) -Next fall I will be doing a clinical internship at an intensive out-patient program dealing with women and female youth with emotional disturbances and other severe psychological issues. -Volunteered for one semester at a group home for adults with developmental disabilities. -Have worked for 2 years at a child development center (a daycare). -I will most likely be a TA for cognitive psychology next spring. -I can get strong letters of recommendation. So, mostly I am worried about my GRE and not having any presentations or publications as of yet. Please let me know what you think! Thanks!!
