  1. No problem! And yeah, not such a fan of the carpet thing! I think I'd prefer even fake wood floors over carpeting, but living off a TA salary, I guess I can't be too picky! I'm mainly looking for a house or apartment shared by grad students; there seem to be quite a few options. Definitely don't want to just rent a room from somebody; I'd feel a bit weird living in someone else's house, like I was a guest or something. There are some nice towns in the area; ideally I'd like to live in or close to Port Jefferson village, so I'll see how it goes. Craigslist also has some listings for rooms in houses shared by Stony Brook students. (http://longisland.craigslist.org/)
  2. I've visited the campus, and I wouldn't call it gorgeous (lots of buildings that were clearly built in the '60s and '70s), but the central part of campus, where most of the academic buildings are located, has nice tree-lined walkways, benches everywhere, and places for students to stop and grab some food. I'm guessing it's really nice there when the weather's warm. The current grad students I spoke with told me that living off-campus is definitely a better option. Stony Brook has a very good off-campus housing website: http://och.fsa.sunysb.edu/. Hope that helps!
  3. Anyone going to Stony Brook this fall? I'll be there for the History PhD program.
