  1. I've been told that it's best to stick to neighborhoods SE of campus, like Henderson. Every property management company near campus that I've managed to find has an abysmal rating on sites like Yelp. Thoughts?
  2. Looks like I'll be a TA for the math department at UNLV next year... Anyone else headed to sunny Las Vegas?
  3. I was in the military before I returned to school... so I'm used to moving all over the place. I moved from Sacramento to Milwaukee in 2007... Now it looks like I'll be moving from Milwaukee to Las Vegas for grad school. I've got an old friend that's moving from Sacramento to Chicago for grad school this fall, as well. I told him that he should just move his stuff to Las Vegas, and I'll leave my stuff in Chicago.
  4. I went ahead and emailed the respective departments... Two said that I'll likely be offered a position after the 26th, but of course I'll take that with a a grain of salt.
  5. C'mon, guys. We're math majors. We should all know by now that most "ranking systems" are subjective, at best... and do little more than stroke the egos of those unaware of that fact . Choose the program that you feel you have the best chance of being successful at. IMHO, you'll have better luck at Irvine.
  6. So I was accepted to UNLV's Math PhD program a couple of weeks ago. They gave me a tentative deadline to accept (March 26th)... but I still haven't heard from any of the other programs I've applied to (the University of South Carolina, Virginia Tech, or the University of Kansas). Would it be more respectful/tactful to ask UNLV for more time to decide, or to ask the other programs if they've made a decision on my application, yet?
  7. I just got an acceptance+TA email from the University of Nevada - Las Vegas. It's my first acceptance... so you could knock me over with a feather, right now. . Still waiting on Virginia Tech, KU, and South Carolina.
  8. It's the same stuff as anywhere else (rent, food, utilities, amenities). Do some research on Craigslist, if you want a ballpark figure. It's a bit over the national average there, overall, but the school and location are worth it. Also, ask your department if it's possible to send a message to the other students that intend to matriculate. You should easily be able to find a couple of potential room mates, that way.
  9. The silence is deafening, on my end. None of the schools that I've applied to have made a peep. Virgina Tech, U of South Carolina, U Nevada - Las Vegas, or KU (Kansas).
  10. All of my incessant email-checking led me to discover/manipulate an awesome mobile front-end for my university's email software. Now I can (with full features) check it at a moments notice, from anywhere. Whether or not this discovery will prove to be healthy or not is yet to be determined, I suppose.
  11. Yeah, I took some unsolicited advice and hid the software clock. I hope the committees feel the same way as you. I haven't heard back from any of the schools, yet. Not a lot of this site's user pool apply to Nevada or Kansas, it would seem... so I can't really draw any conclusions about my viability.
  12. Santa Cruz is one of my favorite cities. It's stunningly beautiful. If I had a choice, I would live there, even though a good chunk of the locals are a bit nutty. Ask a local about the "Hill People".
  13. Columbia is a great town, but a tad small. Almost every state has one or two real "college" towns, and Columbia is certainly that. Personally, I wouldn't live there without a car. MU is a major university with a huge student body... so there's plenty to do. Lots of great restaurants, theaters, and parks... Cost of living is probably right at the national average, but definitely cheaper than a major city (assuming car-ownership in both scenarios). You're a tad closer to St. Louis than Kansas City, but I'd definitely hit both up while you're there. (I grew up in Kansas City, so I'm a bit partial.) Though you'd probably find the drive in either direction is a tad prohibitive if you were imagining making the trip often.
  14. Undergrad Institution: Large State School... It has a PhD program, and is listed on the AMS graduate studies guide, but otherwise unknown. Major: Math GPA: 3.49, 3.67 Math GRE Scores: Q: 720 (75%) (Didn't watch the clock, lol) V: 520 (69%) W: 4.0 (50%) I didn't get a chance to take the subject exam, sadly. Undergrad Courses: Advanced Calc I, II Complex Analysis Modern Algebra <--Didn't do too hot over all due to an unfortunate incident on the final exam. Though it was this prof that (happily) wrote one of my recommendations, so I think I've got this covered. Linear Algebra Numerical Analysis I, II Numerical Linear Algebra ODE's, PDE's Probability Over all, my Math GPA is about an A-/A. It'd be a lot higher if I hadn't missed an entire section of my Modern Algebra final. Program Applying: Applied / Computational Mathematics Research Experience: I did a year in an undergraduate research position in a material science laboratory. I was able to present my results as a display at the 2009 American Physical Society meeting in Pittsburgh, and at the NCUR. I wrote senior thesis on approximating L^2 functions and solving simple differential equations with wavelets. Awards/Honors/Recognitions: A couple of departmental awards, a 10 on the putnam. (LOL) Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Math tutor for two years... Air Force vet. (I'm interested in both numerical analysis and mathematical signals. My job in the military was a wideband radio maintainer, so I learned quite a bit about signals prior to returning to school...). Applying to: University of Nevada - Las Vegas - PhD, Applied Math University of Kansas - Lawrence - PhD, Math/Applied Math University of South Carolina - Columbia - PhD, Applied Math Virginia Tech University - PhD (Masters), Applied Math Possibly in the process of applying to: Western Washington U - Masters, Applied Math Cal Poly - Masters, Applied Math Did I aim too high? My undergrad record is blotchy because I took a bunch of courses while I was still in the military... I'm perfectly comfortable with getting a masters and then moving to a different university for my PhD work, but I'd rather not have to move so much.
