  1. Thanks for the advice. I contacted my DGS and she said that while no departmental fellowships are available, I will likely be able to get one after I am enrolled. Biking so school sounds like a very reasonable option. My BF will be moving down about four months after I do, and I don't really want to get a car until after he arrives. I will look into Mallard Creek Greenway. Thanks for giving me the heads up about it.

    Stipend?

I would recommend against mentioning why you should get financial assistance in your SOP. That's not really what it's for. To increase your chances of getting any kind of financial aid, make sure you apply before certain deadlines listed on sites of schools you consider. Are you in much debt from undergrad? If not, getting an MA might be worth the cost if you don't get any aid, provided that you understand the realities of the academic job market.
  3. I wouldn't call the weather in MA horrible. It can be bad, but it doesn't have the 5 month winters I have endured in Western NY the past four years.
  4. If you have accepted another offer, then it is highly unethical to wait around to decline another out of curiousity. If you're sure, you should decline the offer right away.

    Starting over

If it's any consolation, I am looking at universal rejections (unless I get off of a wait list,) and I got into an MA program. Different field, but I hope you don't think that PhD rejections = MA(or S) rejections.

Thanks for always rooting for me! Anyone here have yet to decline/accept an offer from them?

I just got a solicited response from the DGS. 50% chance of going to the WL. Her response was so kind it made me want to go there more! Here's hoping!
  8. why is it so hard for me to write a simple email asking reasonable questions?

  9. Hi, If my thinking is correct (and it may not be, but I'm pretty sure it is), the eastern side of BU is on the green line (B-line) and Davis Square is on the red line. This would mean that in order to get from your home to BU, you would have to go all the way to the Park Street station via the red line, switch to the Green B-line there, then take that all the way back to BU. That might be a pain. Find out what stops those locations correspond to and then go to http://mbta.com/ to plan your route. There may also be a bus route I'm unaware of (the green and red lines I just mentioned are train lines.) Honestly, I would recommend finding an apartment that is on the B-line. How long do you want your commute to be? Don't resolve to a long commute with the justification that you will do work on the subway: it is often so crowded that you won't be able to find a seat, let alone do work. As for driving: I'm from Boston originally, so I am really opposed to the idea of needing a car to get around. I would not recommend relying on a car to anyone, especially in Boston. I'm told parking is a real pain to find and is very expensive, so that's something to consider. Sorry if that was really confusing. Please PM me or respond here if you need clarification on something, and feel free to post anything I wrote in a Boston related SLP thread.
  10. That's so kind of you to say. Hope I didn't come off as too sad and sordid . You're probably headed to Penn State, correct?
  11. Thanks for keeping your fingers crossed for me. I do hope Indiana comes through, but at the same time, I'm so relieved that I have a great program to attend if it doesn't. I am interested in sociology of religion, political sociology, and social movements. I want to understand the role that religion plays in civil rights movements and how those movements come together to affect the creation of legislature. Now that I've reiterated my SOP, I'd like to apologize for hijacking Roll Right's thread.
  12. Thanks, Doctor Jimmy. Do you know someone who went there, or is this from personal experience? I still may get off the WL to Indiana, so maybe see you there?
  13. Thanks Roll Right! I actually just got my acceptance letter from UNCC and I'm anxiously awaiting funding news. I'm SOOOO excited to return to school! I'll tell you more when I speak to the DGS. If you have any advice about doing the MA -> PhD route, please let me know. Looks like things are looking up for the two of us!
  14. You are making a huge mistake in thinking that Rutgers is a safety school. Guess what their acceptance rate is to their sociology PhD program. Less than ten percent. Cast your net widely.
  15. So, after months of painful rejections from PhD programs, I finally got accepted to an MA program at UNC Charlotte. I'm really excited about the idea of going to grad school there, but I'm worried I may not be able to attend because of the cost. My acceptance letter, after informing me of my admission, told me that I was classified as a nonresident and would have to pay the appropriate tuition and fees. The letter was signed by the associate dean of graduate studies, not by anyone in the department itself. Does anyone know if this is a letter sent out to all accepted students, or only to students who are definitely not getting funding? In the event that I don't get funding, does anyone think that paying the ~8k per semester is unmanagable? Anyone know of any good/cheap places to live that are within walking distance to the campus? Any suggestions on how to fund myself at UNC Charlotte?
