1. Been awhile, but here I am again! I work in an area that could vaguely be called electronics. I have two job offers right now: 1. Well-known company, stellar compensation/benefits, in development of a particular kind of electronic device, medium cost of living area (loved the area) 2. Another well-known company, compensation about 3/4 of the former but with similar benefits, in fundamental research of the same kind of electronic device, very high cost of living area (so-so about the area) as a postdoc. No stated path to convert to full-time after the 2-year tenure. This company division has a LOT of academic connections, as it funds a lot of external research. I could see myself doing either job, but I'm concerned that the industry job means my ambitions to become a research staff member of some company will be stifled forever. However, job #1 is incredibly stable, whereas I would most likely be looking for a job again after 2 years with job #2, and I'll be honest, the job search over the past few months has been really traumatizing. Has anyone had this choice before? Later regret your choice? Love it?
2. I wonder if the budget chicken currently being played between our representatives our president will impact the NSF fellowship? I could be wrong (my news-junkie ways, at best, give me a meager understand of how the government works), but I'm under the impression that the debt ceiling impacts this year's obligations (which our stipends would be a part of).

NSF EIFP

( https://nsfeifp.asee.org/ ) From the past, I recall there being quite a few NSF fellows floating around here. Anyone applying to this new program? I'm applying to one opening, but the application is a real pain given that it seems like they want you to propose follow-up projects for after the "internship" period.
4. I just got the fellowship as well, but here is what I gather: Your NSF funding isn't tied to a project. Switching institutions is not a big deal either. The only big deal is that you must use your fellowship in 12 month blocks, i.e. you cannot cut out 3 months in the middle and then defer the money until later -- it's gone.
5. "Does anyone know what to do if you end up going to a different grad school than the one you put down in your application? I accepted a different offer than the organization they think I'm going to, but I can't find a way to change it in FastLane." Changing your tenure plans didn't work?
6. Rails, I don't know if there is any real way to determine it. There are four cases, however, from my understanding, based on your combination of how many reviewers you got and whether you got the award. They are ranked as follows (highest to lowest): 1. Get GRF and only have 2 reviewers 2. Get GRF and have 3 reviewers 3. Do not get GRF and have 3 reviewers (these are the HM's) 4. Do not get GRF and only have 2 reviewers (no HM) I believe that the first three groups are roughly the top 30%, the second group is the top 15% and the first group is the top 7%, going by previous years' data.

I like how the forum killed my formatting
7. Thanks Hekog. My ratings were E/VG, E/E, and VG/G. Apparently my academic record was "less competitive" according to reviewer 3 (see my first post).
8. Can people still access their rating sheets? I just woke up to find it's a 404 still. I am not even given the chance to login. It cannot be my cache because it 404's in both firefox and chrome.
9. I know I said I would only make one post, but I just woke up to find that I had won. Holy moly was that unexpected... I guess maybe for those who read this thread at some future date, I am a 2nd year grad student.
10. Long-time listener first time poster Haha, I registered to post this but my advisor was actually quite the opposite and was very cynical about my chances. He said "so... what do you think your chances are as a white male?" He's right, though, and I'm not getting my hopes up. My stats are pretty competitive: (3.8 undergrad, 3.6 at a much harder grad school, 1450ish GRE with an 800 in math and a few first author publications with my undergraduate and graduate labs). However, I have no broader impacts, so I'm not holding my breath . This will be my first and last post, so all I would like to say is I hope these fellowships go to the right people and that no truly innovative person gets screwed over by lazy/incompetent reviewers.
