  1. Congrats! I did not fill out the scholarship aid form, simply because I was under deadlines from 8 other applications to complete... May I ask what your specialization is? I'm MS, newspaper. Have you found housing, or did you receive student housing? If you'd like, you can add me on FB (send me a message on here). Here is the FB page: http://www.facebook.com/home.php?ref=home#!/group.php?gid=113107955367602&ref=ts
  2. Hi folks, the application process was lengthy, and after hitting my head into the wall a good many times, I chose Columbia! I will be attending the Grad. School of Journalism. To the J-school admits in this thread, have you joined the Facebook group yet? Also, have you received your financial awards? I'm still waiting on mine. In all, I'm so far happy with my choice and am looking forward to working with the Journalism's best students.
  3. Indeed, that is a GREAT post, JaeB. I want to thank you also for replying to my other thread. In so many ways, I think you're right. I'm definitely a better fit at Syracuse University. The program there is equally rigorous, and, yes, it's in a field that I want to pursue. At the expense of going to Columbia, I would have the personal satisfaction (this is incredibly important to me) of having accomplished so wonderful an endeavor as attending an Ivy League. In addition, I believe that the Master's in Journalism from Columbia could help land me in various other communications jobs. I can't tell you how undecided I am. If it were completely about money (and a lot of it is), I would pursue Syracuse. If it were completely about name, I would pursue Columbia. Most of my friends have said Columbia. My professors seem split and tell me to go "To the place that's best for me."
  4. So, I'm now left with these two offers. I'm not sure which one will be better for me in the long run. For one, journalism is a dying field. But hey, it's Columbia. The education is amazing there, and it will be on my resume for life. I'm not a huge fan of journalism any more, but I could perhaps use a Columbia Journalism degree for something besides beat reporting, right? Syracuse is equally good, and the chances are that public relations will pay more, and the connections are better at Syracuse (in my opinion). Besides being cheaper, the Syracuse curriculum and campus seem like more of a fit for me. Total Costs Syracuse - Public Relations, renowned program. 45k Columbia University - Journalism, best program in world. 75k
  5. That's actually why I'm here. I can't decide between NYU or Syracuse, although I'm leaning Syracuse.
  6. exercising to forget about Admissions!

  7. Bump! This is an important decision for me, so if anyone in the Communications field (or, if anyone has an opinion, for that matter) can chime in, I would be eternally grateful.
  8. Grad Cafe: I've got a bit of a problem right now. Recently, I was accepted into both NYU and Syracuse. Although my signature reads accepted to Syracuse, I didn't plan on getting accepted to NYU. I'm wondering, which university will be better in pursuing Public Relations? I've spoken to people in this profession, and they claim that name is extremely important when getting a job. The difference in cost for me is estimated about 50k for Syracuse and 100k for NYU. Syracuse (Newhouse School of Public Communications) Pro's 13 months cheaper tuition cheaper living offering me TA position (including at least 25% tuition and possibility of more) Class size is around 15 Syracuse Con's Extremely cold, isolated climate Does not have a tremendous name as university (although the Newhouse college does) NYU (School of Continuing and Professional Studies) Pro's Mega connections to NYC through sheer proximity City life New program, NYU name NYU Con's 2 years more expensive (living in Manhattan) large class sizes (140+) program is only ~5/6 years old. Ask any questions... I'll check regularly.
  9. Tell me about it. I live in southern OC, near MV, and commuting even to Irvine can get you in a 20-min struggle with California drivers. I will miss friends and family, but OC isn't right for me. It's back to the East Coast.
  10. I mailed in my deposit and will be attending this summer! If any students are around in late May and would like to tour the campus with me (and my brother), send me a message. BTW, how's the apartment hunt going? I found a place that is opening up in August (new, on-campus housing) that is privately managed. I sent in an application but have no idea if I'll be accepted or how many people are applying.
  11. I'm going to have to go ahead and agree with you there. The area surrounding UNLV is rather gross. It's not necessarily high-crime, but it is trashy. That goes for the entire Las Vegas area except for Henderson and the South/Southeast properties. However, I'm going to say that traffic in Las Vegas is steadily getting worse because so many people are moving there. So, I'd recommend living somewhere close to campus. Commuting from Henderson would make you pull your hair out. I lived immediately off UNLV in some apartments on Claymont and Flamingo (would not recommend), as well as on Spencer and Harmon (would recommend). You can feel free to message me about living there whenever. Las Vegas is a fantastic place, if you like to gamble and shop. Locals get a lot of deals at casinos, and it's nice to rent a hotel once in a while and take a girlfriend out to dinner on the Strip. With that said, it's called Sin City for a reason. I definitely wouldn't stick around for a career in Las Vegas. It's not conducive to a serious study atmosphere. Just keep your head focused while you're out there.
  12. I lived in LV for 6 years and attended UNLV for 1 year. If you have any questions about the area, please let me know. There is plenty of affordable, off-campus housing available.
  13. Keep checking the Admissions News section: Annenberg Admissions News
  14. I am waiting to hear back from Annenberg, too. I applied to two programs, and my interest in attending USC is... ELECTRIC. According to their website, admissions are generally sent out in the last week of March. However, they might be dealing with more than usual this semester. Just be patient. Go TROJANS!
