I'll be in a program on the homewood campus during the fall and will be living within walking distance to campus. I was wondering if it's necessary (or worth it) to bring a car for grocery runs ,etc. because it seems like that area doesn't have much beyond apartment buildings.
  2. Hey! I did my undergrad at Duke and am originally from NC, so I can comment on a few of these. I didn't live off campus, but had several friends do this. As for those four apartments, my vote would be for the Belmont. It's nice and relatively affordable. I think Erwin Terrace is pretty expensive but if your price range is flexible, then Erwin Terrace is definitely a nice option. I didn't have a car during my first year and had one for the final three, and in my opinion, you really need a car or friends who have cars. While you can walk all over campus and science drive is close to the Bryan Center and the LSRC, getting off campus will be a hassle unless you want to be confined to that area near Chipotle on west or Ninth Street on east. I think the Robertson bus still runs to UNC-CH and sometimes, we'd take a UNC bus from there to Southpoint Mall. But, there are a lot of connecting buses and plates in the air, so you might find yourself waiting. Durham does have DATA buses, but I've never taken them. I don't think Durham is very public transportation friendly in general. Apartments in NC are generally unfurnished and you'll have to get your own mattress and box spring and bed frame, but it'll come with a stove/oven, and fridge, I believe, in general. For moving in, I think a lot of people store their stuff with friends or storage facilities in the area. They're usually pretty cheap and most people will share one. People also pool their money together to rent Uhaul trucks. I hope this helps!
  3. I received my MA from Georgetown's english program, and it's a fantastic program. I feel like in my two years there, I became a more critical thinker as well as a stronger writer. I developed my formerly broad scholarly interests. I really can't say enough about the intellectual atmosphere and the supportive faculty. Many of the students (probably half of a cohort) do apply for their PhD in English and many are successful in that. I think that over the years, gtown has adapted itself to students who wish to pursue doctoral programs but it's still versatile and some students choose to get their MA to strengthen their resumes for teaching and others go on to non english higher ed programs. THAT SAID, i was fully funded at gtown (tuition remission plus stipend for two years) and DC is an extremely expensive city (but I love the city and it has fantastic public transportation) to live in. I had to have two more jobs on top of TA'ing my first year and working at the writing center during my second. It was difficult, but I graduated on time and without loans. Do not take out loans for an MA program, especially one in English. It is not worth it. Not sure about the level of rigor at Dartmouth's program, but I've heard it's a year long program and one of my concerns would be if you could get to know your profs well enough to get strong recs from them. I know English programs are very competitive. But, since you want to get your phd in comparative lit, Dartmouth is probably a better fit. It's a difficult choice but good luck and congrats!
  4. It covers tuition, health insurance, and provides a stipend of approx. 18k, but it is just for one year. I think it could cover living expenses in areas adjacent to Chapel Hill proper like Carrboro or Durham. I went to college in Durham, and I find that neighborhood to be much less expensive and less crowded by annoying undergrads.
  5. Yes, mine did not have an assigned mentor either, but later during the open house, the director of my program told me who would be advising me. I received a non-working university fellowship for one year, but nothing else for other years. I think I have more stable offers at other institutions, but NC is not an expensive place to live (I've lived there all my life).
  6. OMG just accepted off the wait list into NYU! so excited
  7. I emailed them two days ago and they told me that official decisions were going out in early March.
  8. I know that the lack of transparency in the admissions process is assumed, but in some interactions with profs, I felt almost lied-to. Currently, I'm a high school English teacher in my second year, and it is the hardest job I have ever had. The stress and the emotional toll of admissions on top of that in my job have been so difficult to juggle. Nonetheless, I started the process last spring, researching and establishing contacts at universities of interest. I took a quant course because I was afraid of appearing so humanities-centric. I also started a research project with my undergrad prof and I am truly enjoying the process as we inch toward publishing our findings. I applied to both education and sociology doctoral programs. During my conversations with poi's, I had so many tell me that my English background (partially funded BA and fully-funded MA at top-10 private schools) would not hinder my application. Only one had the honesty to say that it would be a "major" impediment. But now, I think that for sociology especially, being from the humanities was hugely detrimental as I have no gotten one out right acceptance from sociology programs. I know that I can't be sure that it was because of my background but I researched fit and my stats align with what they posted. I am super grateful to have gotten into a few wonderful programs, but still so annoyed at the schools I chose. If I had known all that I know now, I would have completely nixed the sociology apps and just applied to education schools. UGH
  9. Thanks! It's my first acceptance, so definitely breathing easier now!
  10. Thanks all! Her letter of rec was really nice and well-written so hoping that I do get the fellowship since the soe is only allowed a certain number of nominees. She let me know that my application materials have already gone out to the university level of deliberation and official decisions for all would go out mid to late feb!
  11. I applied to one ed policy doctoral program at chapel hill and poi has already let me know that I've been nominated for a fellowship, so assuming that's an acceptance
  12. I think mine would be that I have my BA and MA in english lit while I'm applying to doctoral programs in sociology. After speaking to some poi's, they tell me it's not a big deal since I have real world experience ( 2 years as a high school english teacher, fulbright scholarship), research (independent study in education program, coauthor pub in the works, 2 conferences), and semi-relevant coursework and a strong gre score. Although one prof did tell me that while my app would be "seriously considered," the weak point is the humanities background. As a result, I read and read and read seminal and contemporary texts in sociology hoping to compensate...
  13. HI everyone! I'll also be applying this fall to about 10 programs! ! I've taken the GRE (V 167 Q 158 AW 5.5) and recently completed a class in quantitative methods to compensate for my less than stellar math skills! Hoping to work on my SOP gradually for the next couple of months. I've been reaching out to professors and graduate students over the summer with some helpful responses! I'm happy to have a support system here!
  14. oh cool!! another english person! so, have you guys been receiving a lot of information from gtown lately? aside from the admissions package, i've heard/received very little. i've also not really received anything from the eng dept itself (other than self-initiated emails)... my undergrad spammed us like crazy after getting in and during all 4 years, so this dearth of info makes me a bit antsy.
  15. hi! i was wondering when georgetown would become a part of the conversation. i'll be in dc at gtown, but for english!
