  1. haha yeah, obviously I cant switch into MS CS, that wasnt my question, sorry if it was confusing. What I am considering is focusing on CS while getting my Masters in EE. The MS EE program seems to be somewhat flexible in terms of what classes and tracks you can take, so i was wondering if anyone familiar with the MS EE program at Stanford could comment on how common it is for people to do this and/or if it makes sense.
  2. So Im an EE major at my undergrad, and Ill be going to Stanford this fall for their MS EE program. However, Im starting to seriously consider switching to and focusing on CS. Now, the MS EE program at Stanford seems pretty flexible, but does anyone know exactly how feasible it is exactly, and how common it is? Ive taken a couple upper div CS classes already, such as operating systems and algorithms, but thats about it. Would there be too many prereqs id need to take to do this?
  3. So the only jobs in microprocessor design that actually requires knowledge in computer architecture and VLSI design are the architects? Alot of the other jobs are more for people that specialize in IC?
  4. Is the EECS MS/Phd harder to get into than the MS-only program? I would assume so, since it is funded, but the website seems to imply that the MS only option is a very small program How common are MS only students for EECS at Cal?
  5. I go to a school on the quarter system, and the fall quarter ends a week or so before the Dec 15th deadlines. From what I understand, grad schools wont see your fall quarter grades during the admissions process if you request transcripts from your school before your fall quarter grades come out right?
  6. Well, there are jobs in VLSI besides just the architect right? For example, skilled people are needed to implement the architect's specifications. I guess my question is, there should be many jobs in the field of microprocessor design that dont require a PhD right? Or is the field really dominated by people with PhDs? Also, I am interested in CS in general (i like coding), but i also found my logic design classes pretty interesting. Btw, do you (or anyone else) know anything about embedded systems?
  7. Can you elaborate on this? kind of alarming since i am only looking for an MS.... and honestly, i am not sure what about computer architecture i am interested in haha... that is why i am still kind of unsure what specialization i want to go into
  8. I'm gonna be applying to MS programs in EE this fall, but I am really not sure how to write my SOP. The general idea I have for the SOP right now is to write about 3 things 1) research experience 2) what area of you want to study in grad school and why 3) why school X is a good fit for you Is this correct? Anyways, im having trouble figuring out how exactly to write about my research. How much should I ramble about the technical specifics of the project I worked on? What am I supposed to say about my research exactly? Also, my research is kind of unrelated to what I want to study in grad school (did research in a CS lab about compression algorithm, and a EE photonics lab involving raman spectroscopy with femtosecond lasers, but interested in something like computer architecture or embedded systems) How do I tie my experiences back in to make it relevant? So far, I am thinking about writing a little about my project, then writing about my responsibility, and then lastly something about what I learned from my research experience (something about problem solving skills, etc.) tl;dr: What am I supposed to say about my research experience exactly? Also, my research is quite unrelated (CS lab involving algorithms, EE lab involving photonics), but wanna do computer engineering type stuff Thanks!
  9. I am an EE undergrad who will be applying for MS programs in EE this fall, but I am still not really sure what field I am interested. I think I want to do something with a mixture of CS and EE, so i guess this means computer engineering type stuff like computer architecture or embedded systems. 0) what other fields have a mixture of CS and EE? 1) What skills/theory will I learn if i specialize in comp architecture or embedded systems? 2) what companies would potentially want these sort of people? job prospects in general? 3) what sort of work or tools might I be doing or using if I go into a career in this stuff? would I get to do any programming on the job? 4) Is this stuff more EE or CS? It seems like some schools (like berkeley) list comp architecture under cs. 5) which top schools have strong comp architecture/embedded systems stuff? 6) basically, I know nothing, so any knowledge about these fields/computer engineering in general would be very helpful. Thanks.
  10. I am a rising senior applying to grad school in the fall. I did my internship last summer. I did mostly web programming for my internship (so like CS related), but I am planning to study some sort of EE/CS field such as embedded systems or architecture. Also, I am only applying to MS programs (and probably wont be doing research-based work), will this affect whether a LOR from an employer is useful?
  11. Well I am applying to EECS grad programs, and my internship was at a CS company. I would probably get a rec from the CEO or the VP of Engineering (small 20 person company). So it seems like LOR from employers is so-so?
  12. Hi, I am a rising senior applying to grad school in the fall. what are my chances at a top Master's program in EE( Stanford, Berkeley, MIT) ? Institution: top public school in California Overall GPA: 3.75 Major GPA: 3.73 working in two labs, one CS related and one photonics related. Hoping to get papers in both labs in a few months. So I have a few questions. 1)How competitive is a 3.7 gpa for the very top grad schools? From what I read it seems like it would be ideal to get at least 3.8. 2)I think i am interested in a field that involves software and hardware such as embedded systems or computer architecture. Does working in a photonics lab raise a concern since it would be in a field that is probably not that related to my desired field of study? 3)How much would getting published, but being like 4th or 5th author, help? Thanks!
  13. Hi, I am planning getting two recs from professors that I am doing research under. However, for my third rec I think I am going to ask my boss at an internship I did last summer. Would getting a rec from an employer be looking down upon?
