  1. Hi, liszt85, and hi dinali~ Thank you both for your replies! As for the financial issue, yes that is a big issue for me... and the reason I didn't list that factor above is that the conditions in that aspect is similar from both schools. UHM, a bit more maybe. (Yes, I seem to be leaning a bit..) And Dinali, your input has helped a lot! And it has helped me put things in perspective.. thanks. Maybe I'll put off my decision for a while and just enjoy the fact I have somewhere to go in the Fall.. Thanks and good luck to you all! p.s. further advise is still very much welcome!
  2. By now, I'm sure everyone must be in the middle of making decisions and quite busy and hectic with it! The posts here helped incredibly, and while I know you all must be busy... I wondered if I could ask for your tuppence on my decision.. I do realize the final decision is up to me, but boy is it hard. Of the 8 applications I put in, I was lucky enough to get admission from the top 2 I'd wanted to go to. 1. SLS program at UH-Manoa 2. Applied Linguistics program at UCLA. I visited the UHM last week, and while I was happy with the people and the program, I also understood what others meant by saying it's not a huge mass of land there! (and I was only there for 4 days..). But as mentioned, I loved the program and my potential advisor... and had almost made up my mind when UCLA offered me admission as well. I'm really, honestly STUCK. Both programs seem to have equal number of pros and cons. I have a SO who will accompany me which also affects the decision I guess. To be entirely honest, I'm thinking the UHM program would fit me a tee wee bit better.... as UCLA doesn't concentrate much on the education aspect.. but then again...... (this has been my thought process the past few days..) I wish you ALL the best of luck in making your decisions and would appreciate any sort of help/thoughts on my issue. Thanks!
  3. hahahahahahah. That's hilarious!!!!

I know! I almost thought I'd answered my own post the other day. haha But then there's also phonologist and psycholinguist who I keep getting confused with as well. Or is THAT just me? Oh, and thanks psycholinguist. So far... I'm still sane.
  5. I chose others, as my field is more towards applied linguistics. I wrote my MA thesis using conversation analysis and although I'm not quite sure how things will turn out as to which program I choose to go for my PhD, my concentration will still be pretty much focused on CA and SLA and interlanguage pragmatics. Wow, it's nice to be able to talk about this with people who understand what I'm talking about! I find people asking me what I'm studying when I tell them I'm going to grad school, and then when I do tell them, they pull these faces..... like they have no IDEA what I'm talking about. :!:

I was feeling really low this morning (for no reason... which seems to happen often ever I started this app. process) and now your post has me laughing out loud. Thanks! Hopefully, by the time next year applicants are reading these posts, we'll all be happily settled somewhere.
  7. Funny... I don't think I've ever been asked this question... now's time to suspect myself as an Linguist.
  8. Wow! It's great to finally see a forum for Linguistics. Kudos to you (not sure who it is...psycholinguist? phonologist? someone else? sorry... )! I'm a little timid in butting(?) in here as although I am a part of Linguistics and my MA was from Linguistics as well, I'm striving for a PhD in Applied Ling. which I know is different from what most of you here are planning to study. So far, I've been accepted to UHawaii-Manoa, SLS program (thanks Dinali for your input to my queries on living in Hawaii!) and Georgetown University , Linguisics program. My best friend who's into Phonology has been accepted to UM-Ann Arbor and is still waiting for several other schools. Glad to have this forum rolling~!
  9. ---I'm willing to leave my home country and my family, and have in tow a husband who can't speak English and won't be able to have a job (he's a well-paid designer here, but won't think of staying here alone with me gone to study) anywhere I decide to go. do I win do I win? Though I doubt I can beat the three teenagers in tow. Good luck, unlikelygrad! and others as well.
  10. Nice, fresh post! Takes my attention away from all the waiting and so forth. Both my parents are pretty supportive. I've been married for a year and a half already, so I paid for my expenses for the appl. process, but otherwise, they're both quite interested and waiting for good news to come. As for my major (applied linguistics), they don't really know what exactly I'm doing, :? so I think they'll be happy if I get into a school that I want. Oh, and somewhere not too far, so they can come visit. But then again, I'm an international, so anywhere in the US is pretty far.
  11. Thanks Dinali & Philmajor. Those aspects are not something I haven't been aware of, which is the reason I'm still debating with my other options, but thanks for your input! I'll definitely be back with more questions if I decide on UH. Good luck to you both as well.
  12. Hi. I actually got my first acceptance letter from UH, so I'm not entirely sure I'll be attending, but it definitely is one of my top choices, given they offer me a nice financial package as well. I just noticed there were no posts for UH in previous years, and was wondering if there were anyone else heading to Oahu come Fall. Anyone?
  13. Oh, and while I'm at it, UMich Linguistics have contacted their first choice of interviewees (I was not one of them, unfortunately), and UCLA Applied Linguistics sent off letters this morning saying they would start making their choices this week, and would let people know by early March at latest.
  14. Really??? There goes another "yet to be announced" rejection.
  15. One school would be million times better than all reject.. and i would definitely go regardless. With no funding however, would be a whole new story.
