  1. I was a TA for 2 years while doing my Master's and have been teaching at a University as a Lecturer for the past four years. Definitely ask fellow students and faculty if they have any material and advice to share with you, there is no reason to do everything from scratch yourself! You always want to try to think of every eventuality for policies for your syllabus but chances are you will miss something until you've been through a few semesters. Just try and be flexible and don't feel bad if you mess up. It will happen and it happens to everyone! Being confident is good and don't be afraid to act like yourself. You don't have to put on a "professor" persona. If you are asked a question you don't know or get something wrong don't try and cover it up with B.S. Students will respect you more if you just admit your mistake/ignorance and tell them you will get back to them on that particular question. I learned a lot over my years of teaching and it was mostly things you learn from trial and error. Good luck!

    Atlanta, GA

I will be starting at Georgia State in the Fall and am a little nervous about moving to Atlanta. I grew up in a very rural area and have never lived in a large city. I've been looking at apartments in the Decatur and Druid Hills areas and was wondering if anyone would recommend those areas? I'd like to be a little away from downtown but not so far that getting to school everyday is a pain. Also we have a fairly large apartment now (2 bed 2 bath) and downsizing is not an option. If you live inside the beltway how is traffic? Is it still really bad and will I still be able to drive to school everyday or will I have to take public transportation to get there in any reasonable amount of time? I'd really prefer driving myself if I can but I have heard many horror stories about the notorious Atlanta traffic!
  3. I have an iPad and I think it will be useful for class related things. I can't speak to using it for classes yet as I will be starting my grad program in the Fall, but for the past 4 years I have been teaching at a college and it is really useful for that as well. Something to think about if you will be a TA, there is a great app I use called Teacher's Attache that lets me keep track of attendance, grades, etc. and it connects to dropbox. Also things I have heard you can do with it but haven't done myself are connect wirelessly to a wireless printer or wireless projector. I don't know about note taking, I guess it depends on how fast you type on the keyboard and for me note taking also means lots of equations so not that easy to do by typing. It is really great to have to quickly and easily check your e-mail, etc. and what others have said about keeping pdfs on it to read is a great idea.
  4. Thanks! I did apply to the same schools and also added more the second time around. First time I applied to four schools, this time thirteen schools. o.O
  5. I finally got accepted off of the wait list at one of my programs today! This is actually my second year applying to grad schools. Last year I didn't get it anywhere and had to re-interview for my current job which was not fun at all. After getting wait listed again this year I was not feeling very optimistic. When the e-mail came this evening I promptly spazzed out by jumping around and randomly punching my poor husband who unfortunately had a migraine today. Then I proceeded to melt into a puddle of relief on the floor and run around our apartment getting our cats riled up as well. Even if you have to apply two or more years in a row it will happen eventually!
  6. Yay! Isn't it great? The Hunter is one of my favorite characters of all time.
  7. My username is a bastardization of a name of a character in one of my favorite sci-fi series. The series is called The Coldfire Trilogy and in it is a race of beings that are kind of like cat-like people. I love cats and feel that I could have been a cat in past life so I liked this race. The character's name was Hessith but I remembered in wrong and thought it was Kessith. It works out since I like Kessith better anyway. It is also my character name from Final Fantasy Online (recovering? current? addict)
  8. I noticed this as well, but then I tried clicking on the link at the top that say Apply Online or something like that. It actually takes you back to that page with the link for status check. For some reason when you log on now it just doesn't take you that page first. At least that is what happened for me. Hope this helps.
