  1. Some of this really depends on your field - what area of ECE are you interested in?
  2. Congrats on your decision! Both are great schools!
  3. Ha thanks! Good luck wherever y'all go - I'm sure we'll all meet up at conferences anyhow!
  4. I'm at Berkeley EE. I know this isn't a surprise, but I'd definitely recommend Berkeley CS over Stanford EE. Quals: Stanford's EE qual pass rate is 50% (first time) and it is significantly tougher than Berkeley's CS quals....the average is here is something like 75%, and if you choose the right area, it's closer to 90%. Berkeley admits a much smaller class than Stanford...from my friends down in Palo Alto, you will feel a lot more stress that first summer if you choose to go there. And you spend more time studying for it your first year that you could be doing research...at least that's our take on it. Startup stuff: Business-wise, I'm a part of the MOT program, and it is fantastic for working with MBA students. I have several friends that compete in lots of business plan competitions and such. The old thinking was that Berkeley was more for "open source" type projects and Stanford was more "startup" oriented, but that has changed. Berkeley had a really bad Intellectual Property department for many years, but it's changed in the last 5 years to be equal to Stanford. You're still closer to Silicon Valley in Palo Alto if that's important to you though. But if you want to do a startup here, there are plenty of others you can work with. Finances: Berkeley EECS doesn't have a financial problem...we're almost self-sufficient from the UC system because of all the funding we get from outside. Actually, we have received permission to do a few things to raise more money that the University prevented us from doing, so we're going to have even more money in a few years. We are going to be expanding the department with more faculty in the coming years, we just finished a new building / fab, and are renovating our old building floor by floor. Personality: On a "fun" note, Berkeley CS department really is fun to be a part of. As a member of Berkeley EE, we've tried to work with Stanford EE to organize some events together, but they are generally unreceptive. A lot of Stanford EE grads are older and more family oriented...so if that's something you're interested in, you'll like it. But Berkeley has much more community. Overall: Why'd I choose Berkeley? The professors....all of the stuff I said doesn't matter if you don't like the faculty. So choose the place you feel more comfortable with, and where you can find an advisor you'll work well with for the next 5 years. Good luck with your decision!
  5. Looks like you heard if you got it....congrats to everyone who did...=( From the DHS site: ANNOUNCEMENT: 2007 Competition Notifications At this time, all applicants selected to receive an award in the 2007 competition cycle have been notified. Those that were not selected will be notified in writing via postal mail.
  6. When you are evaluating the budget situation, make sure you read the Gainesville Sun also. The Alligator and the Gainesville Sun often have opposing opinions on many issues. NDSEG 2007

I'm betting 5 PM EST so that they don't get thousands of phone calls. Good luck everyone!
  9. Also, question...does this mean that only 7% received fellowships this year? My HM said I was in the 79th to 93rd percentile, and the earlier poster who received the fellowship said he/she was in the top 7%.
  10. I think your reviews take into account GPA and GRE...at least on one of my ratings sheets, the reviewer said "Excellent academic record (GPA & GRE)".
  11. Ratings sheets are out. Looks like it was very competitive this year. I got HM with Intell. Merit - Ex/Ex/VG, and Broad Impacts Ex/Ex/Ex. (Elect. Eng.)
  12. I just told my friends "Hey, the NSF results are posted" and gave them the link.
  13. I went to Florida for undergrad and know several people who lived in Purdue. Florida and Purdue are similarly ranked academically (In USNews undergrad rankings, 47 for UF and 64 for Purdue). You should know that Florida is a bit more of a "party school"...if social life is important to you, Florida has a lot of it, but if you don't like it, Florida has that reputation. In terms of cost of living, I'm not sure about W. Lafeyette, but you can get an apartment in Gainesville anywhere from $300 a month in bus range to $500 a month 2 blocks from campus. There is also no state income tax in Florida. $9200 is definitely liveable. When I was applying to grad school (disclaimer: I'm Electrical Engineering at Berkeley now), I thought the most important aspect was finding people/profs I would be comfortable working with. I'd recommend heck out the English dept web sites and see which program has profs that work in your specialization and has the classes you want to take.

    NDSEG 2007

Anyone heard anything about NDSEG? The website is very clear with "on or about March 30, 2007", but maybe some people have already heard?
  15. I applied for DHS and have heard nothing so far. Does anyone know when this is released?? The web site is vague, and when I did a google search, most press releases are like August-September! I have to hope we find out about DHS by mid-April....right?
