  1. Our contact person told me that Berkeley only got 4 this year, compared with 18 in 2006
  2. Technical question about dissertation research fellowships: if you accept a fellowship to fund a year of research, and then are offered a more prestigious fellowship part-way through your original fellowship period, is it possible to cut the original fellowship period short in order to accept the more prestigious one? The timing on all of these big fellowships is staggered and not ideal since I want to get into the field ASAP, but I do want to have something fancy to put on my CV.
  3. Are there any Berkeley grads out there that can offer some guidance regarding first year coursework? Any classes that you would recommend? Perhaps classes that you would suggest avoiding? Any wisdom is appreciated!
  4. Try http://graduate-school.phds.org/rankings/anthropology or chronicle.com/article/NRC-Rankings-Overview-/124703/
  5. I'm only moving from SF to Berkeley, but I had to put my stuff in storage for 2.5 months in the interim. I found a local company called ZipCubes, that's the same idea as PODS but a lot cheaper, safer (rather than leaving your cube on the street overnight, the driver just waits for 2 hours while you load it up) and run by awesome, local people. I managed to fit the full contents of a large bedroom, plus lots of boxes of additional housewares (though no couches) into one cube. I understand they can also contract with trucking companies to do farther moves. Great company if you're in the Bay Area, otherwise it's worth it to search for local PODS-modeled alternatives.
  6. MapLiv is also a decent Padmapper alternative. Locafree aggregates all the Craigslist free stuff on a map in the same way as Padmapper, may come in handy if you're scouring for free furniture within your immediate vicinity.
  7. I use SugarSync and just use the Magic Briefcase as my hard drive and save everything to it. It works well for my purposes.
  8. In exactly one hour and 46 minutes, I will be WhenInHell, FORMER employee of Law Firm, LLC. REJOICE!
  9. Reiterating what you've already heard, by most accounts it seems like teaching experience is really important if you're looking to eventually get hired in academia. Also, most of the Cal students that I spoke with said they actually really enjoyed teaching.
  10. Does anyone know if the https://calrentals.housing.berkeley.edu/ website is worth the money, or is it just as well to scour Craigslist?
  11. No interview, no anything...grumble grumble grumble
  12. Never before have I so craved a generic email.
